The wonderful way to teach reading and writing

Phonics & Grammar
Message from Sue Lloyd & Sara Wernham,
Jolly Phonics Co-Authors

Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar were developed while we

were working as ordinary teachers in a primary school and
all the ideas for the programme came out of our work in
the classroom. The multi-sensory activities were designed to keep
the children active and engaged with the teaching, which led to the
children learning more quickly and effectively.
All aspects of the teaching were trialled before being published and
we have now been involved with many research projects over the
years where the effectiveness of the programme has been verified.
As all teachers know, just telling a child something once does not mean they
understand or will remember it. Therefore revision is built into the programme to
help all children learn as well as possible.
We hope you enjoy the new and refreshed look of the materials, as well as
achieving great results.

Sue and Sara

The programme trusted by thousands of teachers around the world

Our programme is used in over 150

countries worldwide, empowering
thousands of teachers who transform
children’s literacy ability. The programme
enables teachers to get their children
reading and writing from an early age.
As the leading synthetic phonics
publisher, and the most experienced, we
provide a 7-year programme that takes
children beyond phonics and integrates
spelling, punctuation and grammar too!

Why the programme is trusted

• Systematic and progressive approach to
teaching children essential literacy skills
• Embeds phonics, spelling, punctuation and
grammar from Reception/P1 to Year 6/P7
• Enables children to meet and exceed the
expectations of the Phonics Screening
Check and National Curriculum
• Teaching is multi-sensory and active with
fun actions, stories and songs
• Training options to suit your school needs,
including online courses, apps, scheduled
courses and whole school training days
• Resources provide detailed insights on the teaching
approach to help and guide teachers
• Flexible, fun and easy to implement in school

Phonics & Grammar
A whole-school approach to high-quality literacy teaching

The programme continues through the school years,

by extending the earlier phonics teaching with further spelling,
grammar and punctuation concepts. Each year of teaching
provides continuous revision and consolidation of topics taught
in previous years. This enables children to spell and punctuate
more accurately, use a wider vocabulary and have a clear
understanding of how language works.

Sample pages show how phonics, grammar, spelling and punctuation concepts are introduced through the programme. These pages are
from the Phonics and Grammar Pupil Books. The same content can also be found in the Phonics and Grammar Handbooks.

Phonics (Reception) sample lesson

plans on our
website

Children are taught the 42 letter sounds, how to write them, how to blend the sounds for
reading and how to identify the sounds in words for spelling and writing. Alongside this children
learn about tricky words as well as being introduced to the alternative spellings of vowels.

Grammar (Years 1-6)

Children are introduced to parts of speech to include nouns,

verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and
conjunctions. Colours and actions are used to help children
identify parts of speech in sentences.

The examples above show how children are taken through the various forms that verbs may take.

4
Spelling (Years 1-6)

Children are initially taught one way of spelling a sound

before gradually learning that the same sound can be
represented in a number of different forms. They start with
the common variations, before progressing to other, more
unusual spelling patterns that occur as the children develop
their vocabulary for reading and writing.

The examples above show how children are taken through the different spellings of the /ai/ sound.

7-Year Programme Progression

Punctuation (Years 1-6)

Children are introduced to punctuation

concepts and continue to revise these
throughout the school years. Starting with full
stops and speech marks, children will then
learn how to use exclamation and question
marks, colons and semi-colons, hyphens,
commas, bullet points and much more.

Jolly Buddies
Phonics Buddies are pairings of an older child, such as a
child from Year 6, and a younger child, who work together
with Jolly Phonics Extra. The older child is asked to help the
younger child, but in practice, both of them might be struggling.
With Phonics Buddies they both benefit by working together.
