ART APPRECIATION

Rattan Weaving
By Louis Gabriel R. Adaya BSN II – Watson

Rattan is a type of material that is used in wicker weaves. Rattan is a naturally growing vine like
species that is native to tropical regions of Australia, Asia, and Africa. For production use, the
skin is peeled away and utilized for weaving purposes.
According to the person we interviewed, there are steps to follow in rattan weaving. First the
rattan must be cleaned and smoothened to ease the procedure and for the product to look
presentable. Next, insert the rattan strands in the wood post so that the table/chair will be
properly formed and make sure that it is evenly put. In putting the rattan into the wood, there
are steps that the person we interviewed describe such as “mag-bay daan”, “korosan”,
“bayasan”, and “bandahan”. After the four steps, he nailed holes into the wood to tighten the
rattan in weaving. Lastly, clean your finished product to make it look clean and presentable.
