Task 4: Let’s remember what we read and viewed

Writing a Reflection

From the video you have watched, viewed and listened, choose one to make a
reflection where you can include your learning from the videos. Please write legibly.
Observe the mechanics of writing.

From the video that I have watched, the one that I choose to make a reflection is about
a short video on listening to be played (TED Talk) Five Ways to Listen Better. I learned
that listening is a skill. According to Julian Treasure in the TED Talk, “We are losing our
listening.” Although we spend 60% of our communication time listening, we only retain
25% of what we hear.

We are losing our listening because of so many reasons. First, we invented ways of
recording- careful listening is no longer as important as in the past. Second, the world is
very noisy – it’s difficult and tiring to listen. People wear headphones to escape the
overwhelming noisiness of the world. Lastly, we are impatient – we want information to
be short and direct. Conversation is being replaced by ‘personal broadcasting’ (talking
without listening or receiving feedback). We are becoming desensitised to information-
headlines are sensationalised, so we no longer pay attention to subtle information.

Conscious listening always creates understanding, and only without conscious listening
can these things happen. A world where we don't listen to each other at all is a very
scary place indeed. I also learned the five techniques to help people improve their
listening skills that suggested by Mr. Treasure. These are Silence, The Mixer, Savouring,
Listening Positions, and RASA . The definitions of this strategies can see in my answer in
Unit 1 Task 2 no. 5. Mr. Julian Treasure hopes for a world where people listen to one
another consciously. For this to be achieved, he thinks that listening needs to be taught
in schools.

Communication is key in all that we do but how we communicate, the skills involved,
need to be refreshed for us all. Listening is a skill, simply put. Creating the connections
and understandings is brought about by listening. Here Mr. Treasure gives some simple
insight into how we can intently listen with a few exercises. I found that Ted talk is
helpful in reminding me on how to filter through all the noise in our world.

Task 5: Assessment (25 pts.)

Video and topics presented.

(TED Talk on Skills Every Children will need to succeed in the 21st Century)

The skills needed to succeed in our parent’s generation differs from the skills needed to
succeed in our generation. Likewise, skills to succeed for our children are likely going to
be different as well. In this short video, Dr. Laura Jana, a pediatrician, author and leader
in early education and public health offers some ideas to will help you and your kids to
be prepared to succeed in 21st century.

According to Dr. Jana, two-thirds of skills needed to be successful will continue to come
from the traditional “IQ” of mathematics, sciences, reading, writing and comprehension.
However, one-third will come from what Dr. Jana describes as the “QI” (key) skills,
which can be broken down into seven categories:ME: self-control and impulse control.
WE: communication, active listening empathy and ability to learn from others. (WE skills
and ME skills combined are referred to Emotional Intelligence). Why: exploration,
curiosity and asking good questions. Will: self-motivation and determination. Wiggle:
movement and physical interaction with the outside world. Wobble: the ability to face
and overcome challenges and failures. What-if: imagination, creativity and out of the
box thinking

Dr. Jana encourages parents and teachers to keep these “QI” in mind during early
childhood education.
