(A) ‘Segregation of juvenile offenders from other offenders’ what is the justification for doing so and
can you suggest any other alternatives to imprisonment in respect of young offenders?
(B) “A prison can perform many different functions, even simultaneously. It is also a contradictory
institution. The purpose of punishment in form of incarceration is not just to deter or to
rehabilitate but to defend society from criminal predation through incapacitation”. Comment.
(D) Incarceration as a form of punishment since time immemorial and prison abolitionism as a
contemporary challenge. Explain the relevance of the approaches and which approach can serve
the purpose according to you and why?
Q.2 Crime and punishment are inseparable, and “punishment enables us to understand the crime, and
the crime enables us to understand the punishment.” Punishment is the correlative of crime. In the
light of above statement critically examine the aim and purpose of punishment in today’s context
and evolution of prison system in India.

Q.3 How far the international obligations have been inculcated in Indian national framework of laws in
respect of torture in custody. The Supreme Court and High Courts in their several landmark

victims of torture and their entitlements for compensation. discuss with the help of leading case
laws.
Q.4 One point of view is ‘let the punishment fit the crime’ on the other hand, emphasizes the
importance of the ‘punishment fitting the criminals. It is the individual criminal, not the crime that
is the focal point. The object of punishment should be the reformation of the offender as an
upright man and meaningful citizen. Throw light on this observation and the importance of
rehabilitation and vocational training for prisoners.
