Research Consultation

Presenter: Scott T. Yoshimura

Understanding the Problem
• Uncertainty in employee compensation negotiations are
causing questions of increased safety violations and
production throughput.
• Is the stalling of negotiations causing an increased amount
of safety violations?
• Is the stalling of negotiations causing a decrease in
production?
Hypotheses to be tested
1. An indefinite negotiation resolution time is causing an increase in safety
violations.
Indefinite Number of Safety
Negotiation Time Violations

2. An indefinite negotiation resolution time is causing a decrease in

production throughput.
Indefinite Production
Negotiation Time Throughput
The Null Hypotheses (H0)
1. An indefinite negotiation resolution time is not causing an increase in
safety violations.
Indefinite Number of Safety
Negotiation Time X Violations

2. An indefinite negotiation resolution time is not causing a decrease in

production throughput.
Indefinite Production
Negotiation Time X Throughput
Observe & Experiment Study Design – Hypothesis 1 & 2

Sample Sizing
• 3 Strata of 521 employees
• Executive Management
• Middle Management
• Production Employees
• Production Employees will be the focus of the study
• Assuming 300 employees are Production Employees
• Simple Random Sampling will be used to observe 30 employees
• 2 groups of 15 will be used
• One as an experiment, the other a control group
Observe & Experiment Study Design – Hypothesis 1 & 2
Experiment Design – Strategy of Enquiry
• Control-Group Pretest-Posttest
Time àà
Random Production Group 1 Observation Treatment Observation
Assignments Production Group 2 Observation No Treatment Observation

• Group 2 will be the control group by which no treatment will occur.

• Treatment will be in the form of an email announcing that ”progress has been
made in negotiations”, stating that resolution is close to occurring.
Observe & Experiment Study Design – Hypothesis 1 & 2
Random Assignments Production Group 1 Observation 1st PTO 1 day – Email Sent Observation 2nd Day
Day
Production Group 2 Observation 1st Observation 2nd Day PTO 1 day
Day

Experiment Requirements and Process – Strategy of Enquiry

• The company will allow for the two groups of employees 1 day of PTO at separate times.
• Physical separation of the groups is planned in order to reduce bias.
• An email will be sent to group 1, while group 2 is still on observation.
• Up on return Group 1 will read the positive email.
• Group 1 will be observed after they have read the positive email.
• Cameras will be used in the form of GoPro cameras or existing CCTV to record the 30
individuals without their knowledge during the observation.
Observe & Experiment Data Collection– Hypothesis 1 & 2
Random Assignments Production Group 1 Observation 1st PTO 1 day – Email Sent Observation 2nd Day
Day
Production Group 2 Observation 1st Observation 2nd Day PTO 1 day
Day

Data Collection
• 2 non-employee observers will be trained in safety operations and established production
rate expectations.
• Each observer will review recordings of all 30 sample subjects from the 1st and 2nd day.
• Each observer will record the number of safety violations and production measures for
each day.
• Observations of group 1 and 2 will be used to determine if there is any change in safety
violations and production throughput after the positive email is sent in group 1.
• After review of video and record of measures, the raters will meet to review commonality
of the review to determine interrater reliability.
