Listening Activity
Activity I- Let’s Dance!
Goals:
Students will be able to…
 understand basic expressions for greeting and leave-taking, if supported by gestures.
 recognize familiar words and phrases in short, simple songs.
 understand short, simple instructions addressed slowly and clearly.
 get the gist of a simple song, if supported by gestures.
 identify greeting-related vocabulary.
Teacher Instruction and Directions
1. The teacher plays a song on YouTube called “Hello Song for Kids | Greeting
Song for Kids | The Singing Walrus” (see appendix I).
“Now, we are going to listen a fun song together! I want you to pay attention to the dance
moves in the video too, okay? Because we are going to dance with this song after this!”
“So, let’s listen!”
2. After they listen for once, the teacher plays the video again and does dance moves
according to the song by herself/himself, while singing along with the song.
“Now, I am going to show you how to do dance moves while singing.” If you want, you can
also sing and dance with me.”
3. Lastly, the teacher plays the song for one last time and asks the students dance with
him/her.
“Okay, if you are ready, let’s dance and sing the song together!”

Type of Listening:
It is a listen and repeat activity.
Rationale
Using song in the classroom can help students to feel relaxed. It motivates them and
they want to participate the activity. Also, It helps students to remember the target topic better
thanks to the melody and movements. Moreover, students can improve their oral abilities by
singing a song.

Activity II – Puppet Show


Goals:
Students will be able to…
 understand short, simple instructions addressed slowly and clearly.
 recognize isolated words related to familiar topics, if spoken slowly and clearly and
supported by pictures or gestures.
 understand a few basic words and phrases in a story that is read aloud to them.
 understand the main information when people introduce themselves.
 understand simple questions about personal information (e.g. name) if spoken slowly
and clearly.
 get the gist of short, simple stories, if told slowly and clearly and supported by pictures
or gestures.

Teacher Instruction and Directions


1. The teacher brings two puppets to the class, sets up a small stage and explain
the activity briefly.
“Now, I have a fun activity for you! Let me introduce our puppets. This is Bob. (By
showing the blue puppet.) And this is Zubi. (By showing the other puppet.)”
2. The teacher distributes handouts for students to answer while they are
listening and starts the activity.
“Now, I will give you a paper. Please look at the names and choose the best option for
Zubi and Bob.”
“Now, let’s start to our show!”
3. The teacher starts a conversation about greetings between two puppets.
“Zubi: Hello!
Bob: Hi!
Zubi: What is your name?
Bob: My name is Bob. What is your name?
Zubi: My name is Zubi. Nice to meet you, Bob.
Bob: Nice to meet you, too.
Zubi: What are you doing Bob?
Bob: I am going to school. What are you doing?
Zubi: I am going to meet my friends. I am very happy. How are you?
Bob: I am very excited because I go to school.
Zubi: School is a very fun place. I love my teachers.
Bob: That’s great. I have to go Zubi. See goodbye.
Zubi: See you Bob.”

Type of Listening
This is a listening for information activity.
Rationale

Thanks to puppets, it is easier to attract students’ attention. In addition, they can learn
about the events that can be experienced in daily life by using more entertaining tools.
Especially for visual learners, puppets make learning very easy. Students can understand the
target topic better. After the puppet show, the students can retell what is happening thanks to
the catchy tone of the teacher's voice and the movements of the puppets.

Activity III – Let’s Greet Each Other


Goals:
Students will be able to…
 respond to a request for a simple evaluation with a gesture. (e.g. thumbs up)
 understand basic action words. (e.g. 'clap', 'stamp', 'jump', 'walk')
 understand simple spoken commands as part of a game.
 understand simple directions, if spoken slowly and clearly.

Teacher Instruction and Directions


1. Teacher asks students to be pairs.
“Now, I want you to be pairs for our next activity.”
2. After this, the teacher explains the activity which is about greeting ways
briefly.
“I will give you some instructions about greeting ways. We studied them last week.
You remember, right? Okay, now I want you to mime what I say with your partner. Let’s
start!”
3. The teacher starts to give instructions and students start to mime.
“Stand up!”
“Wave your hands to each other.”
“Salute each other.”
“Bump your fists.”
“Shake each other’s hands.”
“Bump your elbows.”
“Bump your feet.”
“Join your palms together.”
4. The teacher ends the activity.
“Okay, you were great! Now, let’s take a break.”
Type of Listening:
It is a listen and do activity.
Rationale
Working in pairs helps students to improve their communication skills. They observe and do
the different culture’s greetings. These greeting ways help them to improve their psychomotor
abilities. Also, they imitate the teacher, and it makes the activity more fun and rememberable.
In daily life, the students can use all of them while greeting someone.
