Project Topic Guidelines for Legal English

 Context of the case: The following text (Print / Visual / Audio-Visual) given to you is
contended (as imagined) in a court of law. The case is made to ban fully or censure
certain sections of the text. In reality, the given text has been officially / unofficially
banned or censured for certain duration or permanently in India. While the case of
unofficial ban has to be treated as politico-religious sanction, with the indirect complicity
of the state. Your given role is to represent the text, either as For or Against – the case.
 Text comprises the list of Print Medium: books, play / drama, short story, poetry, prose;
Visual Medium: Paintings; Audio-Visual Medium: Movies (full length), documentary,
drama (on-stage), songs, Television series, etc. banned or censored in India or abroad.
 Each topic will have two students: For and Against. Students should identify their
Opposing Representative (OR) based on common topics.
 Written submission (along with soft copy) of arguments from both sides as per the
deadline; both parties need to exchange their soft copy drafts and will maintain such an
evidence; failure to exchange if proved will amount to reduction of marks.
 Inquisitorial system of hearing. Each representative will be assessed based on the
effectiveness of their arguments.

 Opening by Defendant (Against) & Closing by Prosecution (For). Arguments will be

strictly based on written submissions unless allowed by the faculty. No counter
arguments can be part of the oral submissions.
 Time allocation: 5 minutes per representative (extra time will be allowed as per faculty
discretion)
 Display of ethical & professional behaviour is mandatory, or else will result in reduction
of marks.

 Format of Contents (Written Draft):

o Cover Page
o Contents
o Introduction: background of the case (mention the name of OR)
o Facts of the case
o Relevant statutory provisions (either here or in appendix)
o Judicial History / Precedents (case citations of previous & leading rulings)
o Legal Issue involved (Identifying the issue based on descending order of
importance)
o Analysis: Arguments For / Against (based on the representative side)
o Counter Arguments (with Rebuttals)
o Conclusion: Final Submission by the representative
o Bibliography

 The above has to be submitted to the concerned faculty on the given deadline, failure to
do so would amount to reduction of marks.
