We are living in an ever-changing world that is controlled by technology and fuelled by

digitalisation. With the whole world becoming accessible to the palm of our hands, digitalisation
has the ability to provide a cutting edge to a company over its peers. Today, companies are
overcoming conventional barriers in order to reach out to their target audiences and digital media
has played a significant role in leaving an indelible print on the minds of the people. With the
emergence of the coronavirus and a worldwide pandemic, the importance of digital media has
increased and continues to grow across all areas significantly. It is this impact that has created my
interest in exploring this field to its full potential and making a career in it.

During my early school days, I spent a lot of time surfing the internet and noticed how various
digital platforms are being used to advertise and sell products. These advertisements over different
forms of media targeted specific audiences based on their interests. Capitalising on this, several
small and big enterprises were thriving on digital media for their business. As a result, the internet
advertising market size has been projected to reach $1,089 billion by 2027 (Rake and Gaikwad,
2020). Mainly because this type of advertising was much more effective than the previously used
print media because of its precise and widespread reach. As I belong to a business family, I was
always curious to explore the field of digital marketing to its full potential and implement these
ideas to my own company. Therefore, after my high school, I decided to pursue a bachelors degree
in management with a specialisation in marketing at The University of Manchester. Here I was
introduced to subjects like Retail Marketing, Services Marketing, Strategic Marketing, Marketing
Communications etc., that provided me insights into the many facets of Marketing. I learnt that
marketing was not just limited to advertising and selling products, but also involved various
elements ranging from appearances, displays of products and services to selection of
communication channels. Apart from the deep insight into the field of business marketing, the
international exposure and working in pressure situation honed my interpersonal and decision
making skills further.

Following my undergraduate degree, my first work assignment was with “Salcon Enterprises”,
which is my father’s company which until I joined had been engaged in a conventional marketing
model. Therefore, I strategically started marketing the products across different social media
platforms like YouTube, Google, Facebook and within a span of two months we were able to add
three distributors with opportunities to expand the business to Northern India. This motivated the
company to further exploit digital mediums for marketing and thus, a full professional marketing
team was employed to take control of the functions. Nice

Subsequently/ side by side , I joined a local clothing startup “A Skating Monk” as a digital
marketing intern. Here my core functional area was to perform extensive research on clothing
preferences of people between the age of 15 and 35 and collecting samples of data to analyse their
requirements. Thereafter, I was engaged in creating content for all the social media platforms to
refresh the brands visibility in the minds of the customer. In this endeavour, we also picked up
certain themes that matched the product line and was very well received by the target audience. This
episode further strengthened my belief that digital media has the ability to transform any startup
into an established brand in no time.

In my current position, as a digital marketing trainee at “The Communication Council”, I support


the creative team in getting the requisite market information by putting surveys, collecting feedback

over the digital platforms and structuring raw data into processed data that can be readily exploited
by the creative team in forming inferences.

Having experienced the power of digital media and the rampant difference it can make to a product
or service, I’m absolutely convinced that digital media has immense growth potential and is an
indispensable part of any organisation. I also believe that an in-depth knowledge in digital media
can transform this world with consumers getting products that matches their expectations and
businesses in creating products and improvising the existing products that meets the customers’
needs. Although my past experiences have turned out to be fruitful for me, I believe that knowledge
provided by the master’s degree of your esteemed university harmonised with my prior knowledge
shall equip me with a perfect skillset which I can use in the path of my future. Thus, I strongly
believe that pursuing a master’s degree of digital media (with a focus on entrepreneurship) at
Ryerson University would be the right decision for my career progression. The entire program
clearly calls out the expected outcomes, offering deeper insights into the field of digital media. The
core courses such as, Digital Media Entrepreneurship, Interaction Design, Digital Media
Environment etc. offer a balance of academic and practical knowledge, and the elective courses
such as, Interaction Design, Human Robot Interaction, Digital Publishing etc. further broaden the
horizon by highlighting the peripherals. I’m most excited to study the course of Interaction Design
as it _____. Apart from the excellent curriculum, Ryerson University is located in the heart of
Toronto, offering endless opportunities to the students to showcase their talents. Adding to this, Dr
Alex Ferworn’s expertise in diverse branches of the digital world is evident in his work. Therefore,
I’d be honoured to have the opportunity to learn under his tutelage.

During the term of the course, I wish to understand the various other ways in which the media
platform can be used by the organisations to gain a competitive edge and continue to thrive. My
pursuance of this course will also help me in creating a network with people having similar interests
and different perspectives that will help me learn and grow as an individual. Lastly, I wish to
become a part of the Ryerson Marketing Association and participate in the various workshops and
events hosted by it.

After the completion of I first wish to gain some work experience in the digital media field at a
giant firm like Electronic Arts, . In today’s digital world, data is of utmost essence and is
considered to be an oil of the future; therefore, I intend to have a marketing agency of my own,
dealing with collection of primary and secondary data and then development of marketing strategies
on the basis of them.
