I. Introduction
Soil preparation is an extremely important step for gardening. You might be thinking that
gardening is an easy job by just digging a hole and plant your seedlings. Although it’s easy for
most cases, but it is not always the case. You will have to properly manage your plant
requirements and soil is the main source to fulfil the plant requirements.
You must need know that which soil is best for the plants and then prepare the soil according to
this. If you want to obtain the best plant growth and production then you will have to follow
appropriate steps to make the soil healthy and beneficial.
Land preparation is important to ensure that the field is ready for planting. A well-prepared field
controls weeds, recycles plant nutrients, and provides a soft soil mass for transplanting and a
suitable soil surface for direct seeding.
When establishing a new garden, certain actions need to be implemented to ensure the long term
success of it. One of these actions involve the initial land preparation which should be done prior
to transplanting of the plant material.
The purpose of land preparation is to provide the necessary soil conditions which will enhance the
successful establishment of the young offshoots or planting material.
The importance of this project is to enhance the student skills that can be learned from every class
then the student can apply it to actual phenomena. By doing this on actual, the students can gain
more ideas to enhance the student ability to making it a much better one.

On March 7, 2022, Monday, me together with my co-students and instructor of BSA-3B went to the field
at San Gregorio, Luna, Apayao and we are tasked to prepare a land suitable for planting vegetable crops
to our own designated area.

This land preparation activity started on the Month of March, held at San Gregorio, Luna, Apayao, under
the subject Agri 221 Vegetable, Root and Tuber Crop Production,

In the case of crop production, we are tasked to go into vegetable production using an area of 25 square
meter each. My area requirements need to plant 3 different vegetable crops and the area I was tasked
with has 2 main crops which is the Eggplant and Chilli Peppers. The 25 square meters will be divided into
2 having the Bitter Gourd in the middle which serves as divisor between the two.

Day 1: March 7, 2022

Monday, today is our first day. First day of getting to meet our instructors and other classmates again
after 2 years.

The first thing we did was the site selection. Our instructor choose to have our site in the part where it is
well drained, have proper sunlight and near a water supply so that irrigation can be easy.

After that, we do the clearing and weeding of the field. Clearing and weeding involves cutting the weeds
using bolo and stacking them on the side.

Immediately after clearing the site, we now proceeded into layouting the area and divide it into 20 parts
for the first 20 students in the class.

Day 2 : March 8, 2022

This day is our second day, rainy Tuesday.

In the morning we clean and remove weeds on the area allotted to the some of my classmates.

After eating our lunch in the afternoon we immediately headed in our own areas to plow the soil for our
beddings. I plowed the soil by hand using a traditional hoe and a shovel. The depth of plowing is about
10–15 cm. Because superficial plowing will not favor plant development, while plowing too deeply may
bury nutrients beyond the reach of roots, so we plowed the soil just right, not to shallow and not too
deep.

Day 3 : March 9, 2022

Wednesday, our third day in the field.

Since I didn't finish the plowing in our second day, I continued to plow my garden beds today, me and my
classmates helping each other to make the work easier for us to finish.

Plowing has many advantages for our plants, this means preparing the seed beds mechanically by
breaking through the ground. Soil can become compact and dense. Also, plowing makes the planting
process easier. With plowing, you break up the soil's blocky structure, making it suetable for planting.

Day 4: March 10, 2022

Thursday, today is our 4th day in the field.

First thing in the morning, I make now my garden beds and a ditch canal because it is necessary since it is
where the water will flow so that my garden wont flood during rainy days.

After which, I now made my first rough leveling, I did this to lower the higher parts of my garden beds
from which soil will be spread out over the lower areas. And then I also did the second more precise
leveling, which I made used of Rakes, I drag the higher parts and lumps move towards the flooded areas
thanks to the water level. And after doing so, I used my bolo to pulverized my garden beds. And there my
garden, now ready to be planted soon.

During our break time, our instructor asked us to do now the seed-sowing. So first, he made us gather
some dried banana leaves, we're going to mixed it with the soil so it will serve as fertilizer. We chopped
the banana leaves into bits and mixed. And then we now sowed the seed into our seedling trays and store
it in a semi-shaded place.

III. Documentation with Caption

Day 1:

On our first day on the field at San Gregorio, Luna, Apayao we do the clearing and weeding. Clearing and
weeding the area is an important control method practiced in many crops. The removal of weeds is useful
because these unwanted plants compete with the crop for space, water and nutrients.

Removing unnecessary materials in the area through hand picking, to have more space for garden beds.
We have to do this first so that there will be no stocked residues in our area when we cultivate it

Day 2.

Today is our second day and we continued to remove again all unnecessary weeds. We made use of bolo.
And then after a couple of hour, we now started plowing the soil. With the use of shovel we plowed the
soil, this involves the tilling or mix-up and overturning the soil.

Day 3.

On our 3rd day we continue to plow the soil. And in the afternoon I now harrow my area, harrowing is
breaking the soil clods into smaller mass and incorporate plant residues. This land preparation is applied
to all of the beds.

Day 4:

On our 4th day, I now do the levelling. This involve crushing and breaking big lumps , crumbs, pieces of
rocks and stones to prevent soil erosion and loss of moisture. I leveled the soil using a rake and crushed
the big lumps pf soil using my bolo. I also continued finalizing my ditch canal or drainage so that the flow
of water is good and will not flood my garden bed and so with my classmate's.

Today after making our garden beds, we now proceed into Seed-sowing. First we collected dried banana
leaves because this will serve as fertilizer. And then we chopped them into bits and mixed it with the soil.
When the soil and seedling tray are ready, then we now proceded to seed-sowing. I sow eggplant and
pepper for my area. Then I watered it using a watering can, And after doing so, we now stored the trays in
a semi shaded place.
