Abstract (write this last!)

● Big ideas - how does this lab connect to the bigger picture idea of why the process of
photosynthesis is critical for the health of our planet as a whole and individual species?
What implications are there for the topic of this lab to society?
● Within this lab report we attempted to test the ability of an Elodea plant to
photosynthesize and produce oxygen…
● Review the entire lab process (brief overview of the methods and materials)
● Results of the lab
Photosynthesis is the foundation of an ecosystem and the life that thrives. This process is
critical
Introduction

Photosynthesis, probably the most important process for our planet as it provides life on earth to
thrive and is the foundation of the food pyramid. The IV is the access to light while the DV is the
amount of oxygen being produced. If access to light is increased, then oxygen production will be
increased because photosynthesis will occur to the elodea plant that is collecting sunlight. In this
lab we cut two elodea plants and put them inside two different test tubes with a few drops of
bromothymol. Secondly you add 15- 20 drops of carbonated water and blow into both test tubes
with a straw. Finally cover one test tube with foil, one without and put it near a light source, and
wait 24 hours. Oceanic acidification is ruining marine life conditions because of the amounts of
carbon dioxide being absorbed by the ocean. My source for this is from the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Methods

In this experiment we started off by cutting the Elodea Sprigs into 8-10 cm length. Begin by
filling each test tube with ⅔ of water and place one Elodea Sprig in each test tube. Then add a
few drops of carbonated water into each test tube. We also put 15 to 20 drops of bromothymol
blue in each test tube making the water turn yellow. Finally put both test tubes under a plant light
with one of them being covered with foil and the other without for 24 hours.

Discussion
The lab report is based on if a plant has access to light will it photosynthesize. In
test tube A the water is yellow because the elodea plant didn’t have access to light thus
releasing out CO2. While test tube B had access to light thus making the water turn
bluish green.
