Texas Annexation
The Texas annexation was the 1845 annexation of the Republic of Texas into the United States of
America, which was admitted to the Union as the 28th state on December 29, 1845. The Republic of Texas
declared independence from the Republic of Mexico on March 2, 1836.

Mexican Cession of Land
This Mexican Cession included land that makes up the states of California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah,
Arizona, Texas, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. The Mexican government received $15 million and
the promise that the United States would settle all claims of its citizens against Mexico.

Oregon Territory
Originally claimed by several countries the region was divided between the UK and the US in 1846. When
established, the territory encompassed an area that included the current states of Oregon, Washington,
and Idaho, as well as parts of Wyoming and Montana.

The Gadsden Purchase
The Gadsden Purchase was an agreement between the United States and Mexico, finalized in 1854, in
which the United States agreed to pay Mexico $10 million for a 29,670 square mile portion of Mexico that
later became part of Arizona and New Mexico.
