LESSON 1

INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY OF STREET DANCE

A street dance is a dance style (regardless of country origin) that evolved outside dance studios
in any available open space such as streets, dance parties,block parties,school yards and night
clubs. It is a dance form, reacting against traditional, high art dance styles. This dance is eclectic
in nature and encompasses a range of dances styles characterized by description such as hip-
hop,funk and break dancing.

A. HISTORY OF STREET DANCE

 Street dance evolved out of hip-hop scene in the early eighties when rival groups of New
York youth choreographed their own break dance and body-popping routines and
performed them in street.

 Clogging is considered as an early form of street dance since it evolved in the street,
factories, and dance parties during the eighteenth century in UK, Western Europe, and
Appalachian urban countercultures at the time.

 This was followed by the hip-hop dances style, b-boying and funk-styles, popping and
locking. Which are some of the most popular street dance styles based on African and
American culture. B-boying helped bring about street dance crew culture, whereby the
dance crews learn about various street dance styles for impression and competition.

 Another example of street dance is house dance that is advanced with house music. This
evolved out to Chicago clubs but grew and developed in the clubs of New York. The
majority of “rave dances” are street dance styles since rave culture is prominent
underground movement.

 Among the electronic dance community, street dance community, street dances in the
form of “rave dances” mainly involved in a consistent rhythm and flow. Street dance styles
like popping, tutting, and roboting came about due ti futuristic-psychedelic movements.

 From out the electronic dance community,street dance like electro dancing, jump style ( an
example of Rave dance) that have emerged are usually considered to be an enjoyable
activity than competition.

 Punk dance has originated among the punk rock community and was made popular by the
band, sex pistols. It is also known as thrash dance, or a form street dance that is performed
impromptu in large crowds.

 Adaptations of these street dances that are practiced today are commercial version of hip-
hop dance. Some schools use street dance as a form of physical education. They usually
require professional instruction or choreography that integrates moves derived from studio
dance styles.

 From these underground origins, street dancing has grown to become a global craze now
and turned ou to be an accepted form of dance in its own right.

B. Movements in Street Dance

1. Breaking - is a style that is for the young talented and extremely fit. If you practice this style
of dance you are called a B-Boy or B-Girl.

Elements of Breaking;

 Top Rock - The steps are performed from standing position starting with the warm up to
the more dynamic moves.

 Down Rock - This relates to the footwork that is performed on the floor.

 Power Moves - This are actions that require a certain amount of physical power to
perform. Sum of these moves came from the martial arts and gymnastics.

 Finishing Move - This comes at the end of the dancers set that is normally a freeze in a
stylist pose.

2. Locking - Is a type of streetdance that involves acrobatic moves and could be seen as comical.
It requires fast and exaggerate hand and arm movements, but the hips and legs are relaxed.
Movements are very rhythmic and sync with the music. This style means your movements in
place, from a very fast move you would freeze and keep it rigid.

3.Krumping - this style of dance requires a lot of energy and is entirely freestyle. This become a
major part of hiphop in the 1990’s. it evolves for primary moves- wobbles, stomps arm swings
and chest pops.

4.Popping - This technique is usually done standing up and quickly contracting and relaxing
your muscles that will cost your body to jerk called a hit or a pop.

5. Waiving - is a dance style that is a basically a combined set of moves that make it look as
stuff as waive is travelling through the body of the performer.

6. Robotics Dance Style - Indicates like a robot. Some confuse this style with that popping.
Below are couple of variations in this style.

7. House Dance - The House Dance main styles including Lofting, Footwork and Jacking. The
footwork is fast while the body movements are very fluid and are synchronized with the speed
of the music.

8. Street Jazz - Inspired by traditional dance, street jazz is a mixture of a Hiphop and Jazz. The
footwork can be fast and complex and the floor moves are acrobatic.

C. Attire for Street Dance


Street dance classes of any style usually advice that the students wear loose-fitting and
comfortable clothing.

D. Benefits of Street Dance

1. Street Dance enhances one’s mood - This dance form is no longer just for the youth, it is also
an outlet for a growing number of adults who aspire to express themselves.
2. Street Dance develops Cardio Fitness - One of the greatest things about street dance is that
it helps the hearts function well.
3. Street Dance trains one to dance with versatility - A street dance performer is able to
explore the movements in all levels and is able to fully sort all the steps.
4. Street dance helps to unleash the inner attitude - A person can have a chance of elevating
his or her hobby or can make a profession out of his/her creativity like teaching in dance
classes.

perform with your own accompaniment. Practice your chosen piece and record your performance to be
