Knowing the various Philippine folk dances is very important because it helps in
understanding our culture and history. The art of dancing theses folk and ethnic
dances is taught in school because it helps Filipino students develop their aesthetic
and artistic sense. This refinement of the senses brought by the arts, music, and
dances contributes to one’s deep appreciation of his identity as a Filipino.
It is only when we develop this strong sense of national identity that we can
effectively contribute in the development of our country.

Physical Fitness Assessment

Physical assessment related to dance.

Flexibility Assessment: Modified Sit and Reach

This test assesses the flexibility of your lower back and hamstring.
You need a wall and a meter stick. Before executing this test, do warm up
exercise by the stretching activities.

Follow the procedure below:

 Sit on the floor with back against the wall.

 Position arms straight toward the floor. One hand must be on top of the other
hand with fingertips touching the floor.
 Mark the point on the floor that fingertip touched. This serves as the point zero
or starting point. Put a meter stick from this point.
 Position heels 12 inches apart
 With arms still straight and finger touching the floor, slowly bend and extend
your arms toward the farthest point that you can reach in this position.
Measure the distance reached by the fingers in centimeter scale using the
meter stick. Hold the position until the distance is recorded.

Lapay Bantigue

An example of a lively folk dance is Lapay Bantigue which is celebrated annually

every 3rd of September. The dance is also recognized even during the Spanish
regime. It is now renowned by the cultural center of the Philippines to be one of
the official folk dances in the Philippines.
LAPAY-BANTIGUE DANCE The hovering of birds more commonly known as
seagulls or the LAPAY, is one of the most typical and beautiful scenes in
Barangay Bantigue, Masbate.
Lapay Bantigue is a mimetic dance that refers to lapay or sea gulls which are
bountiful in Bantigue, a coastal province of Masbate. Similar to the Kalapati (dove)
and Itik-itik (ducks), it copies the movements of the gulls like overly bending back
till the head is near the floor.
The children learned the basic lapay dance steps. First was “lupad” where arms
fluttered in a graceful fashion as in flapping of wings. Then the “tuka” which is a
pecking motion with back bent moving forward and backward. Next is the
“kumintang” which entails rotating of hands and wrist while turning and twirling.
