 OBJECTIVE

On the date of 31 July 2018, Tuesday, we visited PCNTDA( Pimpri-Chinchwad new township
development authorities) in Nigdi, pimpri chinchwad. Aim is to study about the necessity and effects
of application of different passive strategies of ventilation and lighting to make building energy
efficient. PCNTDA, Nigdi building is 5 star rated green building in Pune region and initiative by
pimpri- chinchwad municipal corporation, financed by state govt. of Maharashtra.

 About building
Highly energy efficient building totally ventilated with different natural ventilation strategies, project
by ‘landmark design group’. It is one of the best sustainable building in India, first public building
designed by landmark group, wins lots of prizes for it. All the climate and comfort factor were
considered. yearly light direction, month of peak summer, maximum winds flow and maximum use
of solar passive principles. Building is oriented and located in the surrounding aspects. Various
functional components were used with respect to the sun path for thermal comfort, enhancing this
by enabling cross ventilation and maximum northern day light to avoid use of artificial light which
saves so much energy. some part of building even don’t have artificial light fittings.

 Architectural strategies
Building longer axis is spreading ‘EAST’ to ‘WEST’ so that the principal facade id facing toward
‘NORTH’ considering that Pune has maximum time day light from north with heat gain due to its
location i.e. 18.5 degrees north latitude. So the building has two north side earth-coloured blocks
nearly about 30 maters high from ground level and those blocks are connected with an open and
curve terraces each floors.

Eastern and western facades are bit narrow to trap the wind direction which totally create naturally
windy comfort zone in building. Large full length openings in EAST and WEST walls for allowing wind
flow covered with horizontal louvers to block direct radiations but allows free wind flow to building.
Also small features like stack ventilation in toilet block ,perforated parapet walls and fountains at the
cafe above the parking with terraced garden which cools down westerly winds. Building has very less
air conditioning and maximum area has only celling fans but still get satisfactory comfort through
out the year. Designers has channelized all the waste water to run off into a sedimentation tank and
also the water flow at the vehicular entrance to keep away dust from the building surroundings.

 Inference
Building is look aesthetically very appealing although treated with several green building strategies.
Such buildings gives relief to the energy sources and also create comfort for human body. Project
creates around 100 kw solar panel energy employed during construction. Consideration of climate,
microclimate and also the comfort and aesthetics is well managed in design. The building is a good
initiative by the govt. Of Maharashtra and PCMC.

 Conclusion
This building is an inspiration for upcoming projects in constructions. Such strategies can also be
used on small scale projects, so the local architects and developer can also think on it. Green
building is somehow becoming a necessity in the sense of energy saving and reducing pollution by
mechanical ventilation and light sources. Every student of architecture and even practicing architects
can incorporate such strategies in thire design. This could be one step toward need energy saving.
Buildings like PCNTDA, Nigdi, Pimpri-Chinchwad can be an idol for such projects.
