III. CONTENT/CORE CONTENT How to collect and organize statistical data.

IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

I. Introduction (Time Frame: 30 minutes)
Good day! After learning how to use a survey to gather the needed data, you will now collect and organize them.

A group of 3 students for a science experiment

measured the stem lengths (in mm) of 24 sprouting
mongo seeds after 5 days.

Below are the individual records of the 3 students.

Try to answer the following questions.

Whose record would you look at if you would like to know
1. the observation of a particular plant LETTER? Answer: Carlo’s
2. what plant has the longest or shortest stem measurement? Answer: Fatima’s
3. how many plants have a stem measurement of 12 mm? Answer: Fatima’s

For a data set, it is important that they are organized on records.

D. Development (Time Frame: 100 minutes)
From our previous discussion, Data are units of information, often numeric, recorded and used for the purpose of analysis.
The following are the Methods on how to collect or gather statistical data.

Methods in Collecting or Gathering Statistical Data

A, Direct Method
Method Definition/ Description Example

1. Observation The researcher sees the situation directly.  Most visited Social Media Apps
by students
 Most saleable mobile phone
brand
2. Interview This can be classified as personal,  Effects of Covid19 Vaccines to
telephone or online interview. It is done Senior Citizens
through direct conversations with the  Favorite Disney Character of
interviewee. Kinder Students

B. Indirect method
Method Definition/ Description Example
1. Questionnaire This method uses a questionnaire.  Enrolment form
 Bio data form
2.Reading Statistical Publication This method gathers data from legal  Numbers of registered
documents imposed by laws such as Voters in San Pablo City
registered certificates.  Population of Region IV-A
CALABARZON

How can you organize your data set?

A table is a systematic way to arrange data where data are written in rows (horizontal) or columns (vertical) for easy
referencing.

It has a title that gives you the information about what the data are all about and it has headings for the columns that
tell you the categories.

Consider the table below.

2 of 5
Based on the table,
1. What is the most common MALE name? FEMALE name?
2. In 2005, what is the total recorded male births? 0.28% 5.

3. Based on the table, how many male births have JOHN PAUL as their name?
JAMES 4.
7,389 births 3.
4. Between JAMES and MARY JOY, which has a greater corresponding 878, 084 male births 2.
number of child births? JOSHUA, ANGEL 1.
Answers
5. In 2005, what proportion of the total female births has the name of JASMINE

Stem-and-Leaf Display
This is a method to organize data wherein the leading digits of the data are the stem values while the trailing digits are
the leaf values.
Let us consider Carlo’s Record of data set (Introduction Phase).
1. Write the possible leading digits under Stem – In this case, we have 1, 2 and 3 because by inspection, we have
lengths that are more than 10, more than 20 and more than 30.
Stem Leaf

3
2. Let us record the first 5 measurements.
a. Since we have A-24, we write 4 as leaf of stem 2.
b. For B-25, we next write 5 as a leaf of 2 again.
c. For C-22, we next write 2 as a leaf of 2 also.
d. But for D-32, we write 2 as a leaf of stem 3.
e. Then for E-28, we write 8 as a leaf of 2.
Stem Leaf
1
2 4,5,2,8
3 2
3. You continue to write the trailing digits until Plant Z.

Stem Leaf
1 0,2,8,0,0,4,8,4,8,5
2 4,5,2,8,5,6,7,0,8,5,8,7,8
3 2
4. Finally, REWRITE the trailing digits in increasing order.

Stem Leaf
1 0,0,0,2,4,4,5,8,8,8
2 0,2,4,5,5,5,6,7,7,8,8,8,8
3 2
