Have you heard of parasites? How do you feel about lice getting into your hair or worms into your stomach?
Parasites cannot live by themselves. They are organisms that live in another organism called a host. Worms and lice are
examples of parasites. You can be an example of a host if parasites live in your body.
Diseases cause by parasites are parasitic worm infestation and pediculosis. These diseases can be contagious.

Worms thrive in contaminated hands and surfaces. They can get inside your body without you
realizing it. If you do not practice proper hand washing especially after playing outside, using the toilet and
before handling food, dirt can easily be trapped on your hands and under your fingernails. You hold your
food with your dirty hands, so you may also accidentally swallow the worms as eggs or larvae.
When you are not mindful of your personal grooming, do not practice proper hand washing, and
live in unclean surroundings, you are attracting worms. These worms can be small as a millimeter like a
pinworm or threadworm. They can also be a meter long like a tapeworm. The most common worm in the
intestine is the hookworm or roundworm.

The good news is, parasitic worm infestation can be treated. Visit your doctor for proper deworming.

Pediculosis
It is also called as lice infestation. Lice are parasitic insects. They are small like
sesame seeds. They suck your blood on your scalp that causes it to get irritated. That is
why you feel itchy. They soon lay eggs and stick them on the base of your hair.
How does one get infected? Lice do not jump or fly. They crawl from place to
place and person to person.

Prevention and Control of diseases from Parasites

Parasitic worm infestations and pediculosis and pediculosis are contagious and they can be very uncomfortable. However,
health care professionals have a solution to kill the worms and lice. The family and the school should work together.
To prevent and control these, make it a habit to:
 take a bath regularly
 thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water
 keep your fingernails short and clean
 wash your feet and wear slippers and shoes
 clean your surroundings
 avoid sharing personal things
