D. Presenting the lesson (Student prepares themselves for the processing

(DISCUSSION) of the new lesson. )

For today we will be discussing Film Critiquing as well as the

Elements of Film making. The very main reason why I asked
you to differentiate Film and M ovie is that we will be having
a one shot discussion with regards to film critiquing as well
as the elements of film making.

Film and movie are two words with the same meaning with
different usage. They both refer to motion pictures, a medium
of expression where a series of pictures give the illusion of
motion when projected onto a screen. Film is more commonly
used by those who work in the motion picture industry while
movie is more usually used by consumers.
Although the trend moves towards equal frequency in usage,
film is still more often used in the written format while movie
is more commonly used in the spoken language. The nuanced
usage of the two words gives films an artistic but pretentious
connotation and movies an entertaining but crass
commercialized production.

Elements of Film Making

 Time

Typically in film, the events portrayed on screen take place

over a longer amount of time than the run time of the film. In
a case like this, time must be compressed so a story that takes
place over several days or years can be told in less than two
hours. Conversely, time must occasionally be extended so
events that take place over a short amount of time can be fully
explored.
The use of time in storytelling is important in every aspect of
production, from the outlining stage to the writing of the script
to the production stage and through editing. There’s a saying
in screenwriting that you should enter a scene after it begins
and leave before it ends. You only want to show the audience
what it needs to see in order to help keep them engaged in the
story. While you always hope the screenwriter has done their
job, it’s up to the director to ensure that scenes are tight and
flow smoothly; this includes keying the audience into the
passage of time.

 Characterization

Characterization refers to any aspect of a character’s

presentation, including appearance, speech patterns, behavior
and inner qualities revealed by dialogue or action.

A character’s personality traits are their defining

characteristics, and they are revealed through their actions
throughout the story. If a character is brave, this will be
reflected in their actions and how they deal with difficult
situations.
a writer wants their work to be successful, then they have to
have a clear picture of the characters in their head, along with
knowledge about how the character will act when a specific
situation arises.Characterization is one way for writers to
create an image of each of the characters in their work,
whether it be from a narrative point of view (short story,
novel), a dramatic point of view (drama), or an epic point of
view (epic).
Writers can also choose points-of-view such as first person or
third person. Using characterization helps them get across the
message they want to deliver very easily.
They can show what side the character is on by describing
their actions, thoughts, and feelings through carefully crafted
words. When writing character development, writers make
sure that they describe physical attributes that are consistent
with the specific mood they want to convey through the story.
For example, if there’s a school setting in which there are
many students who are intimidated by one

 Dialogue
Reflect the speaker’s mood, convey his or her emotion, or
provide some window into his or her inner life.

In film, dialogue builds the overall tone of the movie,

establishes the relationships between characters and subtly
reveals the main thematic messages to the audience. Thus,
writing dialogue effectively is a critical part of succeeding as
any kind of writer.
Different genres function well with different dialogues.
Sometimes, its an unexpected use of dialogue that makes the
story most effective. Other times, a foreseen dialogue is
necessary in order to move the plot forward without
confusion. This is why writing dialogue for film can be tricky.

When writing dialogue, filmmakers must decide how they

want their audience to perceive their film. Will it be comedic
and sarcastic? Will it be serious and realistic? Oftentimes,
filmmakers will use a combination of these characteristics
when writing dialogue.

One of the best ways to learn about writing dialogue is by

standing on the shoulders of giants. To help with this, we’ve
gathered together some of the best dialogue examples from
ten notable Oscar-nominated/-winning films from the past
decade

 Sound
Diegetic sound has a source on-screen, recorded at the time
of the shoot, such as dialogue or a car engine starting
Non-diegetic sound is the sound that is added in during the
editing process with no on-screen source, such as voiceover
narration or a soundtrack
Films are produced using three types of sounds: human
voices, music and sound effects. These three types of sounds
are crucial for a film to feel realistic for the audience. Sounds
and dialogue must perfectly sync with the actions in a film
without delay and must sound the way they look. If a sound
doesn’t quite match the action on screen, the action itself isn’t
nearly as believable. One way to achieve believable, high-
quality sounds is to use original sound clips rather than
relying solely on sound libraries for sound effects.
Another way to make a film more believable using sound is it
incorporate what are known as asynchronous sound effects –
often in the form of background sounds. These sounds do not
directly correlate to the action occurring in a scene, but they
can bring a film to life. Including sounds typical of a city or
rural area can help to make the film’s setting more realistic.

Communicates optimism, fantasies, love, or some pleasant

Saturated
Communicates the past, strife, sorrow, or some other

 Motion
Enables precise control of, and optionally also allows
repetition of, camera movements eries of still photographs on
film, projected in rapid succession onto a screen by means of
light. Because of the optical phenomenon known as
persistence of vision, this gives the illusion of actual, smooth,
and continuous movement. Describes how a camera moves
about to help enhance a story. Specific camera movements
help change the audience’s view without cutting; they can be
a great way to make your video more immersive and
engaging.
 Lightings
Film lighting refers to all light elements working together to
guide the audience's attention and mood. This includes the
quality, direction, source and even the color of the light! What
is practical lighting on a film set? The light sources already in .
the scene or on set are referred to as practical film lighting.
Different genres in film can be interpreted in endless different
ways, however, lighting is one of the most obvious channels
through which to present genre in your film. Lighting in ratios
is a measurable way to observe the use of lighting in the genre.
A low lighting ratio, one which doesn’t offer too much
shadow where most of the scene is well lit, shows the
audience a scene or production is lighthearted, perhaps a
comedy or a romance. On the other hand, genres like film noir
have made excellent use of high light ratios, where your
subject is shot half in bright light, and half in dark shadow.
 Editing
Part of the post-production process, film editing is the
technical and creative part of turning the individual shots of a
project together into a connected and comprehensive film
project.
Film editing is also often referred to as “film cutting” or just
“cutting.” Traditionally, this was a way to describe the
physical act of cutting (or splicing) film strips together into an

entire movie, which was how the industry worked in the
analogue days.
Editing is the process of putting a film together–the selection
and arrangement of shots and scenes. Editing can condense
space and time, emphasize separate elements and bring them
together, and organize material in such a way that patterns of
meaning become apparent. In addition, editing can determine
how a film is perceived: for instance, quick, rapid cuts can
create a feeling of tension, while a long take can create a more
dramatic effect.
 Composition
Symmetry and one-point perspective are two composition
techniques that can overlap.Sense of stability which gives
audience a feeling of spaciousness and comfort. So, it’s quite
popular for landscape composition.Emphasize the subject and
make frames more beautiful through filtering the elements
and applying different lights.
 Misdirection
Is just what it sounds like. Most crime mystery films use
misdirection to keep audiences guessing who actually
committed the crime. Can be the entire point on which a film
turns. Often is used at the conclusion of films.
 Switching
Weak character becomes a dominant strong one or a set of
circumstances favorable to one character. Occurs when a
character (or characters) reverses roles in the film.
