TOPIC : BEHAVIOUR OF CONCRETE IN COMPRESSION BY
PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF E-WASTE

SUMMARY:

• India has surely emerged as the second largest mobile market with fifth largest producer
of e-waste in the world discharging about 18.5 lakh metric tonnes of electronic waste
each year with telecom equipments contributing 12% of e-waste .

• Electronic waste (PCB Boards) contains silica, Aluminium, Plastic fiber, Copper. The e-
waste is crushed into the standard size of fine aggregate, It should pass through a sieve
having 4.75mm.

• Improper disposal of e-waste such as land filling leads to its toxic metals reaching
ground water and polluting ground water source and thereby effecting the environment.

• The toxins from electronics released into the atmosphere when piled in lands end up
polluting fresh air and thereby also effecting environment.

• Hence a safe disposal of e-Waste is necessary with its utilisation in construction field.

• Thereby using e-Waste as partial replacement in concrete to enhance its compressive

strength.

• In 7 days curing, the compressive strength of (2.5% - 10% replacement) gave more
strength (by 0.7%,1.1% and1.8% respectively increase) than the compressive strength of
7 days cured conventional concrete and even in 28 days curing, the compressive strength
of ( 2.5% - 10 % replacement) gave more strength (by 0.5%,1.8% and 2.4% respectively
increase) than the compressive strength of 28 days cured conventional concrete.

• We hereby suggest to use those combination of replacement (i.e 2.5% , 5.0% , 10% ) in
concrete works to increase the strength and to lower the cost towards purchasing sand.

• It is suggest to increase e-waste replacement percentages when adopting in concrete

works.

• Machineries are yet to be found for crushing the e-waste into the standard size of fine
aggregate (i.e sand).

GROUP DISCUSSION

THEORY INTRODUCED
In this class we learned how to have an effective group discussion. We were divided into groups of
six each and asked to discuss on the topic given.
ACTIVITY CONDUCTED
Each group was given 15 minutes preparation time and one from each group had to summarize in
front of the class. We learned to initiate discussions and not monopolize the conversation. Everyone
in the group contributed to the discussion. We learned to be much more assertive yet humble in our
efforts to have the discussion involve the entire group. We had to listen to the other’s opinion
instead of just putting our points across the table.
LEARNING OUTCOME
The group discussion helped to shed away the shyness of a candidate and bring her viewpoint
amidst all. It stimulated us to think in a different, new way. It acted as an aid in expansion of the
knowledge of the participants as we were exposed to many different opinions. It helps to analyse
the topic at hand more logically.
Overall though, the discussion was positive because each of us contributed good information and
most of us listened with interest when others members were sharing their ideas. I found that my
team members had interesting views on the topic at hand. Speaking in this group discussion has
helped my confidence and made me more comfortable in taking part in other discussions.

DO’S AND DON’TS OF PARTICIPATING IN GROUP DISCUSSION:

In a Group Discussion several questions spring across our mind. We want to know what actions and
gestures can get positive points and what can cost the selection. Here’s a list of Do’s and Don’ts of
participating in the GD.

Do’s of participating in a GD:

• Listen to the subject carefully

• Put down your thoughts on a paper

• Initiate the discussion if you know the subject well

• Listen to others if you don’t know the subject

• Support you point with some facts and figures

• Make short contribution of 25-30 seconds 3-4 times

• Give others a chance to speak

• Speak politely and pleasantly. Respect contribution from other members.

• Disagree politely and agree with what is right.

• Summarize the discussion if the group has not reached a conclusion.

Don’ts of participating in a Group Discussion:

• Initiate the discussion if you do not have sufficient knowledge about the given topic.

• Over speak, intervene and snatch other’s chance to speak.

• Argue and shout during the GD

• Look at the evaluators or a particular group member

• Talk irrelevant things and distract the discussion

• Pose negative body gestures like touching the nose, leaning back on the chair, knocking the
table with a pen etc.

• Mention erratic statistics.

• Display low self-confidence with shaky voice and trembling hands.

• Try to dominate the discussion

• Put others in an embarrassing situation by asking them to speak if they don’t want.

I think one area I could work on is my delegation skills. I am always so concerned about

If you hire me, I will work with you until I will feel that I am contributing to the growth of

challenging environment.

I can be relied upon and I will meet the deadlines. I would also keep up to my word and
provide a consistent work.

18. Do you consider yourself successful?

I define success as the ability to meet the goals you set out for yourself, so in many ways I
am both. I have been meeting the goals I set for myself, but I also set new goals that I have not yet
achieved. As long as I have goals I can never be completely successful, but neither am I
unsuccessful since I have achieved many of my previous goals.

19.What is more important to you, money or the work ?

For me, work and satisfaction is what matters the most. But having said that, I am not
neglecting the importance of money in my life. Money is the second priority as it needs in life as
well. I know, I have the potential and skill in this field which will surely be evaluated. I just want to
work hard for earning respect from others. If I am capable of doing so, I believe money is not the
factor I will have to worry for.

20. How do you handle criticism ?

I don’t see it as criticism. Instead I see it as negative appreciation. And afterall those who
criticize you will appreciate you after you achieve your goal. I will be calm over criticisms. This
helps me to analyze if the criticism is true and if it is true, it will help me to develop and correct my
mistakes.

L&T Construction Campus,
2nd Floor, TC 1 Building,
Mount Poonamallee Road, Manapakkam,
Chennai 600 089.

Respected Sir,
Sub: Application for the post of Site Engineer in your company.
I was very excited to see your posting for the Civil Engineer position at River Tech. I have been
working in the engineering field for several years, and during that time I have been a part of
multiple projects, including ones that focused on the maintenance of several roads and the design of
Cloud Clearwater Bridge. I am particularly detail oriented, and I have always been praised for my
ability to foresee potential problems and make proactive plans.
In my previous role as Civil Engineer, I was responsible for examining the stability of the bridge
that we were building and assessing how it would withstand an earthquake. I also helped with the
maintenance and upgrading of several roads that needed drainage to make the roads safer for travel
and improve the longevity of the road’s surface.
I am not only attentive to detail when designing and maintaining roads and bridges. I am also
attentive to the criticism of others, and I highly value feedback that will make my projects run more
smoothly. I appreciate straightforward yet relaxed professional interactions, and I aim for that
dynamic with all of my colleagues and outside contacts.
I sincerely look forward to further discussing the role of Civil Engineer at River Tech. I’m also
excited to hear more about some of the projects that River Tech has been involved in as well as any
projects in the foreseeable future. I appreciate your time in considering me for this position.
Thanking You
