CIRCULAR SLABS

Design of CIRCULAR SLABS

(only for internal circulation within SSNCE)

10-02-17 1
CIRCULAR SLABS
Circular slabs are uncommon in buildings;
but such slabs are used in circular tanks
and in well foundations.
When the thickness of the slab is less
than one-tenth the diameter, it is
reasonable to consider the slab as a thin
plate and the elastic theory of thin
plates is applied.
Since concrete is weak is tension,
Poisson's ratio of the slab is assumed to
be zero.

CIRCULAR SLABS
Circular slabs when subjected to external
loading will deflect to a saucer shape.
Hence, they develop circumferential as well
as radial stresses.
In order to prevent circumferential and
radial cracks, it is therefore necessary to
provide radial and circumferential
reinforcement.
But, this arrangement of placing the
reinforcement will be found inconvenient near
the centre due to congestion of radial bars.

CIRCULAR SLABS
Near the centre, the reinforcement should
therefore consist of a mesh so that the
reinforcement provided in each principal
direction is at least equal to the greater
of the requirements of circumferential
and radial bending moments.

CIRCULAR SLABS
Near the periphery of the slab, however, it is
found convenient to provide the radial and
circumferential system of reinforcement.
In simply supported slabs the above
reinforcement may be necessary when the
stresses are considerable.
These reinforcements may be found absolutely
necessary when the slab is fixed along the edge.

CIRCULAR SLABS
We have the following cases of circular
slab :
Case 1. Simply supported circular slab
carrying a uniformly distributed loading.
Case 2. Slab fixed at the ends and
carrying a uniformly distributed loading.
Case3. Simply supported slab carrying a
total load W distributed on the
circumference of G, concentric circle

PROBLEM NO: 1
A hall which is circular has an internal
diameter of 6.50 meters. Design a simply
supported, slab for the hall for a live load
of 3500 N/m2. Use M20 concrete and Fe
415 steel.

PROBLEM NO: 1
Providing 10mm φ bars at a clean cover of 15
mm, effective cover to the inner layer of bars
= 15 + 10 + 5 = 30mm
Provide an overall depth of 200 mm.

PROBLEM NO: 1

PROBLEM NO: 1
This reinforcement is placed in the form of rings.
The rings should be provided in a width equal to
1/6 of the radius of the slab, i.e., within a
distance of 3.325/6 = 0.55m = 550 mm from the
support.
At top also, near the edges provide three rings
of 8 mm φ and provide also radial bars of 8 mm
φ to form a mesh with the rings.

NO: 1

PROBLEM NO: 2
A circular slab is to be provided, for
6 metre diameter circular hall. The
live load on the slab is 3500 N/ m2.
Design the slab. Assume partial fixity
at the support. Use M20 concrete
and Fe 415 steel.

PROBLEM NO: 2

Since the edges are neither simply supported

nor absolutely fixed, the moments for the slab
will have values intermediate to the above two
conditions.

PROBLEM
NO: 2

10-02-17 Compiled by Dr.Y.K.Sabapathy,Prof.,SSNCE 28

PROBLEM NO: 2
Provide 8 mm bars @ 240 mm.
This reinforcement in the form of rings is
needed only near the support. These rings may
be provided for a distance

10-02-17 Compiled by Dr.Y.K.Sabapathy,Prof.,SSNCE 29

PROBLEM NO: 2
Provide 8 mm @ 240 mm c/c.
Since the radial moment varies parabolic ally
from at the centre, the point
of contra flexure for radial moment may be taken
at a distance

i.e. 2510 mm from the centre, or 3075 -2510 = 565

mm from the centre of support.
10-02-17 Compiled by Dr.Y.K.Sabapathy,Prof.,SSNCE 30
PROBLEM NO: 2
It is usual to provide the radial bars for a radial
length equal to the distance up to the point of
contra flexure from the centre of support.
