2. Identify and describe the 5 areas under which the functions of the shadow teacher fall.
4. As an/a educator/ counselor, cite the most appealing finding/s which you can apply in your
own institution/school.
Answers:
1. The ultimate goal of special education shall be the mainstreaming of children with special
needs (CSN) into regular system and eventually in the community. Children with special
needs (CSN) shall be provided with the variety of educational patterns and services. This is
a case of team or collaborative teaching. The commonly practiced assistantship plan is the
shadow teaching scheme. This idea refers to the mainstreaming of a child with special
needs (CSN) in a regular school with additional teaching/care resources. A child is placed
in a regular school and integrated with regular children both in academic and non-
academic activities. The shadow and regular teachers agree that shadow teaching helps
improve the academic performance, independence capabilities and psychosocial skills of
CSN. The regular teacher may introduce and teach the lesson while the shadow teacher
assists the students with their seatworks and activities. The regular teacher is responsible
for teaching the basic academic and non-academic subjects with full integration while the
shadow teacher interprets the child’s needs and abilities and must work closely with all the
team personnel in planning a program which will be beneficial to these CSN.
