TITLE: DATE:
Brazing Tungsten Carbide to low alloy steel 03.03.2017

1.0 SCOPE

1.1 This specification defines the requirements to be met for brazing carbide tips on low alloy
steels using Manual Blow Torch (BT) process in accordance with QB-200.1, Section IX, ASME
Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
1.2 Brazing is a joining process wherein metals ( similar/dissimilar) are bonded together using a
filler metal with a melting temperature greater than 450°C (840°F), but lower than the melting
temperature of the base metal.

2.0 REFERENCED SPECIFICATIONS

2.1 ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section IX, Welding, Brazing and Fusing Qualifications
2.2 AWS C3.4M/C3.4:2007 Specification for Torch Brazing

3.0 MATERIAL and EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

3.1 BASE METAL

 Base metal (low alloy steel) shall conform to the requirements of MCS-113 Rev. 01.
 Base metal( tungsten carbide) shall conform to the requirements of MCS-305.
3.2 BRAZING FILLER METAL
 Filler metal shall meet the requirements of SFA-5.8, F-No.102, BAG-3, BAG-7,BAG-22, BAG-24
 Filler metal may be in the form of round, square or rectangular rod.
3.3 BRAZING FLUX, FUEL GAS OR ATMOSPHERE
 Brazing flux shall be used ALFA SILFUX - B® or similar to its chemical composition.
 Use of Acetylene, Natural gas, Propane as fuel is permitted.
 Purge Using Oil free Dry Nitrogen at 5 to 20 CFH.
 The Purge Gas shall flow continuously during the brazing process, and shall continue until the
brazement is cool to touch.
3.4 JOINT DESIGN
 Joint type is socket type (as per the engineering drawing/specification provided).
 Joint Clearance : 0.001” to 0.010”
 Overlap length: 0.25”( +- 0.005”)
3.5 FLOW POSITION
 The brazements shall be configured so that the flow position is vertical-down.
 Filler metal shall be applied manually (Face fed).

3.0 MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS (Cont’d)

3.6 BRAZING PROCESS

 The brazing process shall meet the requirements of AWS C3.4M/C3.4:2007
 The flame shall be set to slightly reducing when acetylene and oxygen are used.

3.7 BRAZING TEMPERATURE

 Not applicable for torch brazing.

3.8 POSTBRAZE HEAT TREATMENT

 No post braze heat treatment is required.

4.0 TECHNIQUE

4.1 PRE-CLEANING:
 Visually inspect each blind hole for any obstructions or debris before assembly.
 The metallic components to be brazed shall be cleaned and free of rust, scale, grease, oil,
paint or other foreign matter.
 The Base metal (steel) shall be cleaned by non –shedding pads or clean stainless steel wire
brush to remove all oxide in the brazing area, followed by wiping with a clean lint-free
cloth. Do not groove the surfaces while cleaning.
 The tungsten carbide brazes shall be cleaned by grinding the surface with a sander or a
bench grinder, followed by wiping with a clean lint-free cloth.

4.2 APPLICATION OF FLUX:

 The flux (As per Sec. 3.3) shall be applied carefully and worked into the surfaces to be
brazed using a stiff bristle brush to ensure adequate coverage and wetting of the surfaces
by the flux.
 Use enough flux as it’s essential to prevent oxidation of the joint.
 Flux – coated brazing rods are acceptable, but may not be used in lieu of application of
flux to the surfaces to be brazed.
4.3 ASSEMBLY :
 The components to be brazed shall be assembled prior to brazing operation as per the
design specification.
 Make sure that the tungsten carbide button is seated against the base of the socket.
 The joint should be supported firmly during the brazing, can be done by performing a
placement weld (Tack, Spot, Resistance), or by use of a fixture.

4.0 TECHNIQUE (Cont’d)

4.4 PURGING:
 As per Sec 3.3
 Brazing shall take place within 8 hours after cleaning and assembly of the joints.
 Start the brazing of the joint nearest to the purge inlet.

4.5 POST BRAZE CLEANING

 All the completed joints, when it’s cool to touch shall be cleaned by a wet cloth followed
by a steel wire brush to remove any loose surface oxidation residue.
 The brazed parts shall then be subjected to sand blasting, in order to prepare them for
Phosphating or Xylan Coating.

5.0 QUALITY REQUIREMENTS

5.1 VISUAL INSPECTION

 Each brazed joint shall be visually inspected after the completion of brazing and cleaning
of the outside of the joint. The following conditions are unacceptable:
1. Presence of flux or flux residue.
2. Excessive oxidation of the joint.
3. Presence of un-melted filler metal.
4. Cracks in either of the components.
5. Filler metal not clearly visible all the way around the joint at the interface of the
carbide button and the socket.

5.2 TEST REQUIREMENTS

 A test coupon with material and equipment requirements (as per Sec. 3.0) and
manufactured using a technique (as per Sec.4.0) defined in this specification shall be
subjected to :
1. Visual Inspection as mentioned in Section 5.1 of this specification and in accordance
with section 6.4.3.4 “Alternate Examination Techniques” of AWS C3.4M/C3.4:2007
