Group Project Presentation Outline

Introduction: _____ -1.5 minute
 Our team members are Casey, Spencer, and Joey
 Our topic is Hydraulic vs. Pneumatic Applications
o Topic- Hydraulic vs. Pneumatic Applications
o Discuss presentation focus
 Casey-
 Joey-
 Spencer-
The difference between Hydraulics and Pneumatics
 Compressibility
o Hydraulic oil is for power transmission and acts like a solid
 Oil is not compressible
 Oil Volumes are easy to calculate
 Oil must be returned to a reservoir
o Pneumatics use air for power transmission
 Air is very compressible
 This makes air volumes hard to control
 In Pneumatics air exhausts back to the atmosphere
 Advantages for hydraulics and pneumatics
o What are some advantages of hydraulics?
 Hydraulic systems can run up to 5000 PSI or higher (this equates to higher
forces)
 It’s easier to control the extend and retract speed in hydraulic systems
 Hydraulic components, (because of their high speed and pressure capabilities),
can provide high power output with very small weight and size. (Small Packages)
o What are some advantages of pneumatics?
 Pneumatic systems are a cleaner system than hydraulic systems
 Pneumatic systems can be Faster than hydraulic systems
 Pneumatic actuators can move allot more precise than hydraulic actuators
 Conclusion
Cost differences between hydraulics and pneumatics
 Pneumatics
o Pneumatic component prices are less expensive for a comparable component in a
hydraulic system
o The air in the atmosphere is the transmissible supply for the pneumatic system, which
makes it less expensive to operate than in hydraulics
o One Air compressor can run multiple actuators in a system

 Hydraulics
o Hydraulic component prices are more expensive for a system comparable to a
pneumatic system
o Hydraulic fluid needs to be purchased for each individual hydraulic system
o Each hydraulic system needs its own hydraulic power unit
Danger of Pneumatics and Hydraulics
 Pneumatics
o Compressed air in a pneumatic system is stored energy that must be released to the
atmosphere when the system is being worked on
o Lock out devices should be incorporated into the system
 Hydraulics
o When working on a hydraulic system, the input power source must be shutdown while
the system is being worked on
o All lines or components, should be relieved of pressure before taking any part of the
system apart
o Lock out devices should be incorporated into the system
Conclusion
 Bring presentation together
o Hydraulics and Pneumatics are in our everyday lives
o Fluid Power will be around for the entire existence of human industry
