Activity 3
“Creating My Own Art Movement”
Directions: Kindly follow the given procedures.
●For this activity, you are required to conceptualize your own art movement by answering the
following questions. This ART MOVEMENT must enshrine originality and relevance to the
contemporary world. Although borrowing some ideas from the various art movements that we
discussed is allowed, the depiction and principles must be authentic.

Step 1: Choosing your cause for the art movement. What are you for? What are you against?
What are you passionate about?
Answer: My art movement called “Pili-kula”. It is derived from two Tagalog words, to choose
(pili) and cinema (pelikula). It focuses in reviving our nations’ authentic cinematography. My
movement is against on people who will think that my art movement is irrelevant and not worthy
of money, time and attention because of them our cinematography is slowly disappearing. I am
passionate about this because I want to preserve and show this to the new generations and to the
next generations as well so that, they can appreciate the classic and original cinematography of
the Philippines. Also, to save our cinematography from being forgotten instead to be famous and
influential in the world like Korean and American industry. I want also to address job mismatch
of our local artists because they are forced to change their passion just to support their needs and
also the needs of their family. I want them to continue their passion and interest while supporting
their needs.

Step 2: Situating your cause for the art movement. What are current social, political or
economic situations that serve as the inspiration behind your chosen movement?
Answer: I chose this art movement because nowadays Philippine cinematography is slowly
fading away. The reason behind that is our government doesn’t give enough funds to preserve
this one of our nation’s treasure. Money is required to produce a good film. Commercials and
advertisements are required to make a film known which need more funds. This monetary issue
might be resolved if our government give assistance to the Philippine entertainment industry.
Also, one of the problems in our nation is job mismatch and I want that to give just a little
solution that can solve this issue is by giving our artists the jobs that their deserve. Other reasons
are technological advancement and the new generation have lack of awareness, knowledge and
education about this.
Step 3: Anchoring your chosen art movement. What are previously discussed art movements
that have strong influence in your chosen art movement?
Answer: The art movement that strongly influence my art movement is aestheticism art because
it inspires my art movement to represent the factual reality of what happening in our
cinematography and music. According to PressReader (2020), from 131 million in 1996 to 63
million in 2004, the Philippine film industry has seen a continuous fall in viewership. From a
peak of 200 films a year in the 1980s, the country's film industry shrank to 56 new films in 2006
and roughly 30 in 2007. It clearly showed the factual reality that is happening on our nation’s
cinematography. Also, one of the influences of aestheticism art on my art movement is it can be
used against loss of tradition. Loss of tradition in the sense of Filipinos watch movies on their
gadgets and televisions instead of traditional way how to watch movie which is going to the
movie theaters and watch the movie there.

Step 4. Setting your principles for the art movement. What are the important concepts,
principles, and features that must be embodied in any artwork following your created art
movement?
Answer: My art movement’s concept is bringing back our old cinematography and convince our
fellow Filipinos to watch our own movies in traditional way-movie theaters. It will feature our
local cinema-makers and other artists. They are actually the protagonist and main workers for
this movement because they are the one who will produce the films. There is the only one
principle and that is all is natural, no video manipulating or editing and doesn’t use any green
screens except if it will be really needed but it is not suggested. Our actors should not use any
make up to lighten their skin color rather than I want them to show their real and natural color so
that, people can stop the white skin is the standard of beauty. If they are tan skin, let them be
proud of their own skin color.

Step 5. Describing the characteristics that must be embodied in the art movement. What
particular appearance, manipulation of elements of art, and principles of art design do you want
to see/ manifest in your created art movement?
Answer: It has no manipulation of elements of art but it will use all the principle of arts and
particular appearance depending on the scenes that will be take. If it will need, we will use some
manipulation and editing but we will avoid it as possible as we can. In terms of the settings of
the cinemas that will produce, it should be only in the Philippines in order to seize the
opportunity to show to the people worldwide the beauty of our country. It will be a lowkey way
of saying to people that will watch our films to visit our country. If many tourists, will be go
here, we help on our country in terms of tourism. It should also show the artworks of our local
artists by displaying it to the settings like in the house, school, etc.
Step 6. Making sense of your art movement. What functions does your art movement play in
understanding our world? What do you think is the essence of your art movement?
Answer: The function that my art movement play in understanding our world is to show the
reality of the darker side that only few people can see. It will serve as an inspiration to many that
appreciate and preserve their own country’s culture and tradition to avoid the completely loss of
these nation’s treasures. The essence of my art movement is to preserve and bringing back our
authentic cinematography. It will also be important to our artists because it will serve as big help
to them and assist them to live now for their passion. It can also seize our local artists’ talents
and creativity so that they can enhance their skills and to show to the people national and
international their talent in terms of movie-making.

Step 7. Mobilizing your created art movement. What methodologies will you utilize to
mobilize your art movement, or ways to make your art movement known by other individuals?
Answer: First, I will make an advertisement about my art movement and posted it to social
media as well as broadcasted on TV and radios. Second, I will raise a fundraising program for
our artists with the help of the people who believe that we should bring back Philippines’
cinematography and we will try to ask a support from our government. If government will deny
to support my art movement, we will continue our fundraising and ask help also to the foreign
people who also interested to bring back our classic cinematography or just love everything
about the Philippines. The collected funds will be given to our artists so that they can start to
make a good film. I will suggest also to the artists that can the produce a film that has a unique
plot but the same genre or it can be different as well as long as it is different from the cliché plots
twists or plots of films like polygamy and other overused plots/genre. I will suggest too that the
film should have a subtitle in many languages in able the foreigners to watch the film. Third, we
will appoint experts about this area to manage this and make this movement life longing in order
to preserve our classic cinemas. Lastly, if they are finish to produce films, I will help for
advertising and selling movie tickets so that they can sold many tickets and continue to produce
films. I and also the members of my movement will also convince our fellow Filipinos to watch
and patronize our own films.

Step 8. Monitoring and evaluating the success of your art movement. What techniques will
you use to monitor the progress and evaluate the effectiveness of your art movement?
Answer: Me and my co-members will check regularly if there is any progress on this movement
by communicating the hired experts and also our local artists that working on this movement. If
there are anything we can help, we will do this wholeheartedly for the sake of reviving our
classic cinematography. We will also establish goals and milestones in order to give motivation
to our artists and rewarded them if they achieve it even little achievements. I can see the success
of my movement if it will contribute to the rise of Philippine cinematography. It should give a lot
of viewers for the Philippine movies and give a recognition national and luckily international. If
Philippine entertainment industry contribute big in our economy, I can say that this movement
was a big success.
