Assignment No. 4: THERMODYNAMIC PROCESSES

Directions: Answer the following questions below.

1. Based on the video presentation, complete the table below. Identify the thermodynamic
processes. Give the equation for work (W), heat (Q), and internal energy (ΔU).
Answer:
PROCESS WORK (W) HEAT (Q) INTERNAL ENERGY
(ΔU)

Isochoric (ΔV=0) W=0 Q= nCVΔT ΔU=Q-W

-volume is constant

Isobaric (ΔP=0) W=nRΔT Q= nCpΔT ΔU = nCVΔT

-pressure is constant W=PΔV

Isothermal (ΔT=0) W=Q Q= W ΔU= 0

Q= nRTln[Pi/Pf]
-temperature is W=nRTln[Vf/Vi]
constant

Adiabatic (Qtotal=0) W=-ncvΔT Q= 0 ΔU= -W

-the total heat of the

system is constant

2. State the First Law of Thermodynamics.

Answer:

The First Law of Thermodynamics, also known as the Law of Conservation of Energy, states
that “energy cannot be created nor destroyed but it can only be transferred from one place to
another or transformed from one form to another.”

3. What is internal energy (ΔU)? Give the mathematical equation.

Answer:

The internal energy of a system is the total energy of the system. When the heat or energy is
absorbed by the system, the system gains energy which is known as the internal energy which is
represented by the symbol capital “U”. Further, the equation for change in internal energy is: ΔU=
Q - W.
