Grade 11 – Daimler Engr. Cecil A. Cespedes

PERFORMANCE TASK #1
PROBLEM:
Survey tests on leadership skills and on self-concept were administered to student-leaders. Both
tests use a 10-point Likert scale with 10 indicating the highest scores for each test. Scores for the
student-leaders on the test follow:
Student Code A B C D E F G H I J

Self-concept (x) 9.5 9.2 6.3 4.1 5.4 8.3 7.8 6.8 5.6 7.1

Leadership skill (y) 9.2 8.8 7.3 3.4 6.0 7.8 8.8 7.0 6.5 8.3

1. Compute the Correlation coefficient, r.

9.5+9.2+6.3+ 4.1+5.4+8.3+ 7.8+6.8+5.6+7.1

x= =7.01

y= =7.31

2. Interpret the result in terms of:
a. Strength

This is a strong correlation, which means that high X variable (Self-concept) scores go with
high Y variable (Leadership skills) scores (and vice versa). It also states that self-concept
and leadership skills of student leaders have a strong relationship with each other

b. Direction of correlation.

This is a positive correlation, which implies that the self-concept and leadership skills of
student leaders have a direct relationship with each other.

3. Find the Regression Line that will predict the leadership skill, if the self-concept is known.
Student Code A B C D E F G H I J 𝚺
Self-concept 9.5 9.2 6.3 4.1 5.4 8.3 7.8 6.8 5.6 7.1 70.1
(x)
Leadership 9.2 8.8 7.3 3.4 6.0 7.8 8.8 7.0 6.5 8.3 73.1
skill (y)
xy 87.4 80.96 45.9 13.94 32.4 64.74 68.64 47.6 36.4 58.93 537

9 6 4

n = 10, since there are ten pairs of data

∑ x =70.1, ∑ y=73.1 , ∑ xy=537 , ∑ x 2=518.29
Solving for the y-intercept a, we get

( ∑ y ) ( ∑ x 2 ) −( ∑ x )( ∑ xy )
a=
n ( ∑ x ) −¿ ¿
2

Solving for the slope b, we get

n ( ∑ xy ) −( ∑ x )( ∑ y )
b=
n ( ∑ x ) −¿ ¿
2

Hence, the equation of the regression line y ' = a + bx is y ' = 0.90483 + 0.91372x,
where the slope is 0.91372 and the y-intercept is 0.90483.

Interpretation

In our regression line equation, our slope b is 0.91372 which means that for evert
change in the self-concept of a student leader (x), the value of leadership skills of a student
leader (y) also changes at 0.91372 unit in the average. Similarly, the value of the y-
intercept a is 0.90483. This means that the score of a student leader would be 0.91372 if
he/she has zero leadership skill.

4. Predict the Leadership skill of a student leader whose self-concept skill is 1.5.
'
y =0.90483+ 0.91372 x

y ' =0.90483+ 0.91372 ( 1.5 )

'
y =0.90483+1.37058
'
y =2.27541

Hence, if the self concept of a student leader is 1.5, his/her expected ecpexted leadership skill
would be 2.275.
