F1 WINNER
 Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has become the championship
leader in Formula 1 after winning recent Spanish Grand
Prix in Montmelo.
 It appeared as though it was going to be another victory
for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who had a 19-point lead over
Verstappen coming into this race, but an engine failure in
the 27th lap caused him to retire.
 Mexican Sergio Perez finished second, 13 seconds behind
but with the consolation of a bonus point for fastest lap,
after being told to let his teammate pass for a third victory
in a row after Imola and Miami.
 Britain’s George Russell came third.

HOCKEY INDIA SENIOR WOMEN


NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
 The Hockey Association of Odisha was crowned as the
Champions of the 12th Hockey India Senior Women
National Championship 2022 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
with a thrilling 2-0 victory over the Hockey Karnataka in
the final.
 The final match was a closely contested affair between the
Hockey Karnataka and the Hockey Association of Odisha.
Both the teams started well, as they created several goal-
scoring opportunities.
 However, solid defensive performances from both the
sides ensured that the match went into the halftime with
the scoreline reading 0-0.

HOCKEY INDIA
Hockey India plans, directs and conducts all the activities for
both men and women hockey in India. It is recognized by the
Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India as the sole
body responsible towards promoting Hockey in India. It was
formed after Indian Hockey Federation was dismissed in 2008
by IOA.
Headquartered in New Delhi, Hockey India was established on
20 May 2009 and is affiliated to the International Hockey
Federation (FIH), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and
Asian Hockey Federation (AHF).
Hockey India with the assistance of Sports Authority of India
and Department of Sports, Government of India, trains players
at sub-junior, junior and senior level. The governing body
engages in Coaching the coaches, educates and equips
technical officials and umpires.

AUSTRALIA’S NEW PM
 Anthony Albanese was sworn in as Australia’s 31st Prime
Minister in a short ceremony in Canberra today. He took
oath of the office with a promise of swift action on climate
change, greater gender equality and improved wage
growth.
 Anthony Albanese’s Labor Party defeated the ruling
coalition led by Scott Morrison in Australia federal
elections 2022 on Saturday. Anthony Albanese is a
pragmatic leader from a working-class background who
has pledged to end divisions in the country.
 To form a majority government, a party needs to win more
than half of the 151 seats in the House of Representatives.

GLOBAL HEALTH LEADERS AWARD

 India’s ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers


were honoured with the Global Health Leaders Award-
2022 by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Sunday,
22 May.
 They are among the six awardees recognised at the
ongoing 75th World Health Assembly for “outstanding
contributions to advancing global health, demonstrated
leadership, and commitment to regional health issues.”
 The recipients of the prize are decided by WHO Director-
General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, as per a press
release.
 ASHA (which means hope) are more than 1 million female
volunteers in India.

GLOBAL HEALTH LEADERS AWARD


 Honoured for their crucial role in linking the community
with the health system, to ensure those living in rural
poverty can access primary health care services, as shown
throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
 ASHAs worked to provide maternal care and immunisation
for children against vaccine-preventable diseases;
community health care; treatment for hypertension and
tuberculosis; and core areas of health promotion for
nutrition, sanitation, and healthy living.
 The other awardees include polio workers who were shot
and killed by armed gunmen in Takhar and Kunduz
provinces in Afghanistan in February 2022.

DELHI GETS NEW LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

 Vinai Kumar Saxena, the chairman of Khadi and Village


Industries Commission (KVIC), recently appointed the new
Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of Delhi.
 This comes after Anil Baijal resigned as the Delhi L-G last
week citing personal reasons.
 A statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said that
President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted Baijal’s
resignation as the Delhi L-G and appointed Vinai Kumar
Saxena as the new Lieutenant Governor.
 Saxena took over as the chairman of KVIC on October 27,
2015.

DELHI GETS NEW LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

 The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi is the constitutional head


of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The post was first
established in September 1966, when The Delhi
Administration Act, 1966 came into effect. Thus the former
Delhi Legislative Assembly was replaced by the Delhi
Metropolitan Council with 56 elected and 5 nominated
members with the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi as its
head. The Council however had no legislative powers, only
an advisory role in the governance of Delhi. This setup
functioned until 1990, when the Assembly was reinstated;
the position of Lieutenant Governor retained its role.

ARTICLE 239 AA - There shall be a Legislative Assembly for the
National Capital Territory and the seats in such Assembly shall
be filled by members chosen by direct election from territorial
constituencies in the National Capital Territory.

COMMONWEALTH DAY 2022


 Commonwealth Day is celebrated on May 24 in India and a
couple of other countries. Commonwealth Day is also
commonly known as Empire Day.
 It was only after the death of Queen Victoria, who passed
away on January 22, 1901, that Empire Day was first
celebrated.
 The first Empire Day was celebrated on the late Queen’s birth
anniversary which was on May 24, 1902.
 By the 1950s, the British empire had started to fall apart as
many of the colonies began to gain independence and Empire
Day lost its significance.
 However, most of them maintained a relationship with Britain
and formed a new organization called the Commonwealth of
Nations.

COMMONWEALTH DAY 2022

 After World War II, the relationship of commonwealth nations


with Britain also saw a change, as they began to celebrate
their own identity and idea of nationalism.
 In 1958 Empire Day was changed to Commonwealth Day.
