AIRPORT TERMINAL

(ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN THESIS)

Y17AP0104
THE MOST HETIC ENGGROSSING SPACE ON EARTH

The airport terminals as the potential to be called as “THE MOST HETICT & ENGGROSSING SPACE

ON EARTH” They offer architects the chance to design a grand scale.

Terminal is a building within an airport where commuters go to depart on a flight, or the space at which they

arrive upon landing. A terminal is made up of several gates where Planes Park and commuters wait to board.

In large terminals, these gate areas may be diverge into sections known as concourses, filled with dining,

shopping and lounge options, as well as restrooms and other facilities. For departing passengers, the

terminal is where they purchase tickets and check in for their flights, check their luggage, go through

security, and wait until it is time to board their plane from an assigned gate.

Similarly, upon landing, a plane parks at a gate connected to a terminal, from which a passenger disembarks

and proceeds to customs and immigration for international flights, finds their connecting flight, or collects

their belongings at baggage claim area.

Airport terminal planning depends on major factors like : POPULATION, AGE GROUP SEGERATION

,AIRCRAFTS DEMAND ACCORDING TO THE FREQUENCY,AIRLINE TRAFFIC

SCHEDULING, BAGGAGE QUANTITES ,NO OF AVERAGE VISITORS ,NO OF EMPLOYEES

,ECONOMY & MAINTANCE,SPACE SEGREGATION,COMMUTER FLOW,REGIONAL

ASPECTS , SECURITY, PRIVACY & SAFETY

Along with these concerns, the spatial organization of the airport terminals accommodates various

“commercial”, “leisure”, “retail” and “service based spaces” in addition to the core function of aviation.

HISTORY: Huffman prairie at Simms station near the Wright brothers „ home town of Dayton , Ohio, has

the strongest claim, given that it had had a modest public face as well as a testing function ,that the planes

there flew relatively long distances rather than merely hopping , and the pilots were trained there . The 34

hectare path of damp cow pasture, with its timber hangars dating from 1904 and 1905, its boundary marker

flagpoles and its launching derricks, is where the Wrights did their proving work, having returned from

making the first flight far away at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, with its usefully constant costal winds.

Therefore, this airfield as be called mother and father of airports and 1904 as its foundation date.

SYNOPSIS
INTRODUCTION:

An airport terminal has the potential to the is a space within an airport where commuters go to depart on a

flight, or the space at which they arrive upon landing. The terminal is made up of several gates where Planes

Park on the runway and the commuters wait to board. In large terminals, these gate areas may be diverge

into sections known as concourses, filled with dining, shopping and lounge options, as well as restrooms and

other facilities. For departing commuters, the terminal is where they collect their boarding passes and check

in for their flights, check their luggage, go through security check , and wait until it is time to board their

plane from an assigned gate.

When was the first airport built? Huffman prairie at Simms station near the Wright brothers „ home town
of Dayton , Ohio, has the strongest claim, given that it had had a modest public face as well as a testing

function ,that the planes there flew relatively long distances rather than merely hopping , and the pilots were

trained there . The 34 hectare path of damp cow pasture, with its timber hangars dating from 1904 and 1905,

its boundary marker flagpoles and its launching derricks, is where the Wrights did their proving work,

having returned from making the first flight far away at Kitty Hawk, north Carolina, with its usefully

constant costal winds. Therefore, this airfield as be called mother and father of airports and 1904 as its

foundation date.

Comparing the ancient history times to till date airport terminals have gone several technological and

structural advancements, The 20TH century like 18TH and 19TH centuries , was largely defined by the rapid

advancements in transport technology . By the year 2000 the airport terminal had become strategically, the

most important building in the world. The design of terminals has had to adjust to massively increased

security screening procedures in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 .

NEED OF STUDY:

Aerodrome terminals are essential to the economic development of the airports and their cities, countries and

regions. They directly contribute to the economies by providing services to airlines moving passengers and

transporting cargo. These help in economical growth of the governments, consumers, &industries.
Terminal expansion meets the needs of efficient air transportation and also addressing concerns about the

impact on the surrounding lands.

To meet the present and future aviation needs and to promote regional and economical growth of the city.

Designing a terminal involves planning, designing, and construction runways, and other ancillary facilities

for airlines to operate.

AIM: To design an airport terminal in unique way that is linked with nature with a wide range of concerns
that go hand in hand to demonstrate efficient functioning of the building from an inconvenient mode to a

comfortable mode of travelling and approaching towards the terminal with a tranquil experience.

OBJCTIVES:

 Integrating space with the natural and tranquil space techniques to enhance the commuter‟s

experience.

 Providing active indoor recreational universal spaces considering all the age groups.

 Incorporating natural elements in the closed indoor environment to attain commuters comfort. (i.e.

vertical hanging garden, interior landscape for the recreational and social spaces .

 Incorporating regional vernacular material elements as statements icons and diminutive galleries for

tourist attraction.

 Contemplating aesthetical and ambience of the terminal which meets the needs of the commuters

and create an engrossing space which also focus on the sustainable economic and market value.

SCOPE:

The continuous growth in aviation industry and the increase in population gives a massive increase in

economic scope to develop and extend aerodrome terminals as it has become the primary space requirement

which consists of the universal, social, regional, historical, leisure, recreational spaces along with the

technological infrastructure advancements.

LIMITATIONS:

 This design is limited only to design the aerodrome terminal.

 This design is limited only to fixed no of commuters as per the flight capacity.
