PARABOLA CLASS-1

DEFINITION OF CONIC

The locus of a point such that the ratio of its distance

from the fixed point(called focus of the conic) to the
distance from fixed line(called directrix of the conic) is
always constant(called eccentricity), where fixed point
does not lie on the fixed line .

does not lie on the fixed line .

The equation of any conic can be compared with second

degree general equation.
C:

Q. Find equation of conic such that its focus is (2,3) ,

directrix is x-y=0 and eccentricity e=2 .

STANDARD TERMS WRT ANY CONIC

1. FOCUS & DIRECTRIX: The fixed point and the fixed

line from which the ratio of the distances are
observed.

2. ECCENTRICITY: The ratio of the distances from focus

and directrix and is denoted by e.

3. AXIS OF THE CONIC: The line passing through the

focus and perpendicular to the directrix.

4. FOOT OF DIRECTRIX: The point of intersection of the

axis and directrix.

PARABOLA 2 Page 8
5. VERTICES: The point(s) where the conic meet its axis .

6. CENTRE OF CONIC: The point which bisects every

chord passing through it.

7. FOCAL CHORD: Any chord which passes through the

focus of the conic is called focal chord.

8. LATUSRECTUM: The focal chord which is perpendicular

to the axis of the conic.

FIRST DEFINITION OF PARABOLA

The locus of a point such that its distance from the fixed
point(focus) is equal to its distance from the fixed
line(directrix).
