C. Stability Analysis

Stability analysis will give the reader a piece of information about whether the present
retaining wall design is appropriate to avoid sliding or even overturning due to the given
environmental condition. To know that, it is enough to examine the attained ratio value of the
sliding or overturning of the retaining wall. If those values are below the each of its
requirement value, it means that the retaining wall is considered safe.

C.1 Object Above Backward Soil

Above the backward soil, analysis engages a situation where the soil holds some objects that
have masses per area about 1 Ton/m^2. Notice that this number is only an estimation.
Through this number, the reader could imagine the soil is holding up some objects that heavy
enough.

C.2 Water Level

Analisys considers the soil contains water level at about 2.500 metes above the baseline.

C.3 Work Forces

There would be some forces working for the retaining wall. Each of them has different
purpose. Forces that occurs to the exist retaining wall is listed below:

Forces Value (Ton/m) XCG (m) ZCG(m)

Weight of RW 22.980 1.359 2.267
Soil Upper Foot 24.105 2.816 3.887
Active Soil 12.066 - 0.811
Passive Soil 8.898 - 0.449

C.4 Stability Calculation

Over the stability calculation, the reader is expected to know whether the current retaining
wall deisgn would be sliding or even overturning. If the result the un-unit ratio value is above

the maximum requirement value, it means the undesired situation occured. In the other
words, the present design is possibly to slide or overturn, depending on to which the
overvalue happens. Table below reveals the result of the stability calculation

Categories Attained Value Required Value Notes

Sliding 1.559 1.500 Safe
Overturning 10.308 2.000 Safe

C.5 Summary

The present retaining wall is reliable to hold objects above soil that have a maximum
homogen weight about 1 Ton/m^2, and water that has maximum level at around 2.500
meters measured from the baseline.

D. Strength Analysis

Strength analysis is expected to give information to the reader about whether the retaining
wall is failed or not when it faces the environment external forces. Over this analysis, the
reader would know which part of the retaining wall that occurs maximum stress. After that,
by knowing the maximum material's capacity in receiving stress, the reader could know
whether the current retaining wall is failed or not.

D.1 Stress Tensor

Stress tensor analysis gives the reader an information about the location and value of
maximum stress that occurs on the retaining wall. Picture 1.1 presents a visual result of
software Nastran Patran in which the analysis is conducted

Picture 1.1 Stress Tensor (Von Mises)

According to the done analysis, because of the external environment force working to the
retaining wall, the maximum stress will occur at the upperside of the foot part of the retaining
wall, to which the weight of the held soil contained. It presents as a maximum received stress,
which shows at about 6251.40 kPa or 6.251 MPa. Hence, according to the used specific
material, which has maximum stress capacity at 12.7 MPa, this retaining wall be
considered safe.

D.2 Constraint Force (Magnitude)

Constraint force analysis will show the reader about the location and value of the effect
forces of the retaining wall. Over knowing this value, the reader will know whether the
supported soil will remain stable or failed. If the result value overs the maximum force
capacity of the soil, it gives the reader coution that the soil will be decrease or break out.

The analysis will be conducted using software Nastran Patran. According to the done
analysis, the result is shown as the picture 2.1 below.

Picture 2.1 Constraint Force (Magnitude)

Mentioning the visual given picture, the maximum force occurs at node 164 with the value
about 128.11 kN/m. This value is considered as below the maximum force capacity of soil,
which knows about 255 kN/m. Therefore, the analysis says that the existing retaining wall
will not fails the existing soil. On the other hands, It is considered safe.
