CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

INTRODUCTION

This chapter is concerned with the view of related literature taken from different

authorities, articles, authors, as it relates to the project under investigation. It tend to

look at other views and also help to draw findings and give valid conclusion on the

assessment of the impact of modern technological equipment of the impact of modern

technological equipment in office Technology and management programme.

This work shall be organized under the following sub-headings:

1. Concept of modern technological equipment

2. Types of modern technological equipment

3. Measurement of modern technological equipment effectiveness.

4. Advantages of modern technological equipment

5. Impact of modern technological equipment

6. The problem of office technological and management programme in the use of

modern technological equipment.

CONCEPT OF MODERN TECHNOLOGICAL EQUIPMENT

Modern technological equipment, in the view of Ovbiagele (2006) are not only aimed

at assisting clerical work but also assist the work of the management and other related

professionals in the discharge of their duties.

14
He asserted that the contained increase in business activities around the globe, only

necessitates a proactive response in approach and method and the approach and

method must be such that would facilitate and ease the achievement of goals and

objectives of business organizations.

One of such approach is the gradual changes from manual to mechanical methods of

operations towards business automations.

The automation of business or office functions is not only aimed at assisting clerical

office work, but also the work of management and other related professions in the

discharge of their functions. The term automation as associated with the application

of computers, information and communication technology. The main reason for

modern inventions and innovations in business and human activities with the advent

of computers and information technology is that the world has been reduced to a

global village with a high level of information exchange.

The countries involved in this modern technology are considered to be most highly

developed technological, and the economy of such country is distinguished by the

excellence of their educational system. As a result of continuous emphasis on the

environmental changes, today’s world has been caught up in the intricate of web

technological development which has touched almost everybody and every

organization.

Okagbare (2012) described modern technology as the skills required in the usage of

office tools, equipment and machines and their basic operational techniques for

15
maximum output. Nothing makes an office to be a modern office than the machines

and equipment that are used in that office. It is either the workers or the building but

the type of machines that made it so sophisticated and different from traditional office

where all workers are manually carried out.

Modern technology has become so entrenched in the idea of modern society that the

two are nearly inseparable. Developing countries try to get better utilities more

vehicles, and faster computer as well as internet and cell phones, instant messages

because that is what makes business thrives in the modern society.

TYPES OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT

In the cause of teaching and learning the teacher sometimes and the student comes in

contact with various technological equipment which can help in alleviating the

problems encountered in office technology and management, Akporowho (2010)

opined that the computer is an electronic device that has ability to accept data,

internally store and automatically execute a program of instruction, perform

mathematical, logical and manipulate operations on data and report the result.

Ekanem (2005) opined that computer is one of the equipment that is very useful and

inevitable in data processing especially now that the world has been turned into a

global village through information technology. He went further to say the computer

isan electronic data processing machine that operate under the control of instruction

stored in its memory and can also be an electronic device that is capable of accepting

data, processing it into a useful information and storing it for future use or

communicating it to users.
16
The photocopying machine in view of Iredia (2010), is one of the latest machines

found in modern offices today. It is photographic in nature having in built camera

which enables it to copy extra copies of the original. Hence, they ar called facsimile

copier. Photocopiers can copy both black and white and various colors. The leading

model in photocopying machines is the xenon brands of machines. They produce

work faster and neater than duplicators.

Ejeka and Aniemeka (2003) also postulated that some of this equipment are

accounting machines, electric scanner, franklin machine fax photocopying machines

and so on. They went on to say that these equipment form the most important tools

which when put into proper use brings efficiency and productivity into office work.

MEASUREMENT OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT

EFFECTIVENESS

For every equipment to be successful with good planning and well controlled, the

effectiveness of it (equipment) on the students is what many tertiary institutions fail

to carry out, in order not to fall into this same problem, office technology and

management programme should measure the effectiveness of the modern technology.

Measuring the effectiveness of the equipment by the institution may not be easy to

come by, knowing the effect of an equipment either on the potential effect on

awareness, knowledge or preference may be difficult to measure but all these can

come through.

17
Researching into this modern technology and their impact on the development of

office technology and management programme

ADVANTAGES OF MODERN TECHNOLOGICAL EQUIPMENT

Education portal corn stated that some of the advantages of the modern technological

equipment include increased efficiency, expanding capacity, enhanced flexibility,

postulating the electronic information and financial record. Computerized processes

such as document production and statistical calculation have made many offices

much more efficient without compromising quality. Technological advancement has

allowed device such as computers to become smaller and more effective.

Modern technological equipment has eventually become a necessity to business, for

instant messaging, the internet, and telephone system which are more integral to the

working office life when the students leave the programme

Modern technology also helps in making quick corrections, saves time, lead to

efficiency and help students in easy comprehension when learning.

THE IMPACT OF MODERN TECHNOLOGICAL EQUIPMENT

The rise of the internet combined with technological advances has reshaped the office

technological and management programme.

The twenty first century utilizes numerous electronic gadget and devices that have

created efficient systems and offering multiple benefits. There are no questions that

18
modern technological equipment has propelled O.T.M. to the height and has been a

boost to productivity rather than drain.

Ahukannah and Ikelegbe (2011) stated the following ways modern technological

equipment has been an impact to office technology and management programme.

Modern technological equipment has radically changed the way a student or students

organize their data and paper information. There is the use of computer storage

system that saves time, money and paper. The use of this equipment will help

students in the programme in storing company’s important business document,

customer’s information, employee’s information when they go out into the society as

professionals. There Is no doubt that saving files in hard drives or disc are now the

preferred.

Communication: One of the greatest examples of how modern technological

equipment has reshaped O.T.M. programme in the twenty first century is the field of

communication. Students can operate cell phones, use electronic mail, video

conferencing application and so on to communication instantly between themselves

and on a global scale. Modern technological can aid mathematical model of stock

control to determine when replacement order should be placed, these models are run

on computers which produce notice.

Modern technological equipment is of benefit to students, teacher and the society.

19
THE PROBLEM OF OFFICE TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT

PROGRAMME IN THE USE OF MODERN TECHNOLOGICAL

EQUIPMENT

Office technology and management programme encounter problems in the

manipulation of some of these modern technological equipment such as computers

and so on. Some of these, problems include the challenge of power supply which is

not always constant thereby hindering the effective learning of how operate these

equipment for both teacher and students.

Another problem is that of cost, the cost of maintenance of this equipment’s is

usually high; the teaching of how to operate this equipment cannot be effective

because of breakdown.

There is the problem of specialist which is not enough in teaching, handling and

repair of these equipment.

SUMMARY OF THE LITERATURE REVIEW

The acquisition of special skills and ability of modern technological equipment are

important to office technology and management. It was observed that to get the best

out of teachers in the programme, the institution and Government should make these

modern equipment available for use.

The impact of modern technological equipment has developed office technology and

management in the area of communication, it has brought new innovation.

20
Conclusively the future of O.T.M. programme is uncertain in the area of office

equipment and responsibilities this makes it so exciting and frightening before now,

changes were more gradual and predictable but the pace of transition from use of

some equipment to others for example the use of type writers to computers and

different versions of software’s was been dictated by the rapid changes in the

business world. The change is inevitable and accelerating all the time.
