CASE STUDY

Jake created a small video games company that specializes in creating fighting games similar to Mortal
Kombat and Street Fighter and action games like Medal of Honor and Call of Duty. When he started his
company a year and a half ago, he never used paper to communicate with his employees. When Jake hires
someone, he gives the new employee verbal instructions on what he expects them to do. He calls for a
meeting once every week to relay his directives for the whole team. The company's main office is in
Quezon City with 12 employees. Also, six (6) months ago, they won an award for best foreign game in the
annual Game Awards for their "Conqueror's Grip: Blood and Freedom" game, a historical first-person
action game that revolves around the life of a Katipunero spy during the Spanish colonization in the
Philippines. The Game Awards is a prestigious ceremony honoring the achievements in the video game
industry.

With that award came forth multiple projects. Jake needed to expand his operations; thus, he established
a new office in Makati and hired new employees. He asked his brother Cesar to manage the Makati office
and sent his two (2) senior employees to help with the expansion. After a while, the two (2) senior
employees began to experience discomfort in Cesar's management style. They complained about the
restrictive policies Cesar are giving them. They are constantly being reprimanded and scolded for the work
they are normally doing when they were still in the Quezon City office and as opposed as to how Jake was
managing and directing them before. They narrated that Cesar often disregards their suggestions and is
very traditional in his managing style. The two (2) employees eventually submitted their resignation letters
to Jake.

Questions (3 items x 10 points):

1. Is there anything wrong with how Jake managed the business right from the start?

2. Who between Jake and Cesar caused the two (2) senior employees' work discomfort? Why do you
think so?

3. Given the facts, what should Jake do to address these dilemmas?

Answers:

1. Is there anything wrong with how Jake managed the business right from the start?

There is nothing wrong with how Jake operated the company from the beginning because there
is evidence that his company is successful. Indeed, they are the recipients of a major award in the sector
of video games. The issue first arose when he assigned his brother to oversee and direct their Makati
branch, which was contrary to how he managed and directed his employees. Before putting Cesar in that
position, he should train him first. It can also be noticed that Jake has nothing against giving verbal
directions to his new employees because he always calls the staff together for a meeting. The award
speaks for itself, so there's no problem with how Jake managed because he did a great job considering
multiple award nominees, but it can be improved, such as making a paper about what they need to do,
because while just talking and commanding the things that needed to be done can be a less hustle, putting
it on paper can be a less hustle. Jake could have also created an organizational structure paper in which
he explained each worker's responsibilities and roles so that if someone takes over, such as Cesar, the
employee will not be blamed or scolded for the work that they are doing because they have evidence that
they are simply doing their job based on what the organizational structure expects them to do.

2. Who between Jake and Cesar caused the two (2) senior employees' work discomfort? Why do you
think so?

Because of Jake's lack of communication, but largely because of Cesar, reprimanding and scolding
employees can limit their willingness to complete their tasks. Cesar may need to apply the proper skills to
assist him in managing the staff. If counseling and motivation are ineffective, he may be able to employ
the Progressive Discipline. Cesar since he has strong regulations and has been lecturing the two seniors,
as opposed to Jake. Cesar's administration is to responsible for the two employees' unhappiness, as he
chokes them with his rigid policies and strict punishment style. Jake, on the other hand, is liable for
mismanagement due to his failure to interact with his team. As a result, Jake and Cesar triggered the two
senior employees' emotions, prompting them to submit their resignation letters. The two senior
employees were ok while under Jake's department because it was demonstrated that they were even part
of the staff that created a successful award-winning game. They only felt uneasy after being transferred
to Cesar's crew, and Cesar's management style drove them to resign.
3. Given the facts, what should Jake do to address these dilemmas?

He needs to talk to Cesar because he is clearly the source of the problem, given that there was
none until Cesar arrived. If Jake truly wants those two seniors back, he can talk to them and ask the two
employees to explain what happened in order to minimize confusion and to help the company solve this
type of situation quickly in the future and urge them to stay by working things out for both parties. After
resolving this issue, Jake should learn and improve on the things he overlooked that may have contributed
to the occurrence of this predicament. He should also create an organizational structure paper that
describes employees' duties and responsibilities. Using business skills such as communication with
subordinates, counseling services, motivating, and maintaining discipline. When these four criteria are
integrated, they can help the business develop and eliminate employment losses.

The following are the primary issues that must be addressed:

1. Gather information on the topic. Jake cannot fix a problem unless he first understands what it is.
Talk to the persons involved and get all sides of the story so he can build a strategy for resolving the matter
and returning everyone to work.

2. Jake should educate Cesar, Jake's younger brother, on how to apply Jake's way.

3. He should deploy his senior personnel in top-level management at the new Makati office. While
teaching his younger sibling how to lead.

4. If he cannot locate a suitable replacement, Jake should be in charge of the other Makati office.
As a result, he must effectively make decisions when selecting.

5. He should also take steps to avoid a recurrence of the situation in the future. When he encounters
an issue at work, he should consider what he's learned and put policies and procedures in place to avoid
it from happening again.
