Understanding

Quadrilaterals
IMPORTANT NOTES

Polygons
● Simple closed curve made up of only line segments

● ‘Poly’ = many ‘Gon’ = angle

Classification of Polygons
● 3 SIDED - Triangle [ Sum of all angles = 180° ]

● 4 SIDED - Quadrilateral [ Sum of all angles = 360° ]

● 5 SIDED - Pentagon [ Sum of all angles = 540° ]

● 6 SIDED - Hexagon [ Sum of all angles = 720° ]

● 7 SIDED - Heptagon [ Sum of all angles = 900° ]

● 8 SIDED- Octagon [ Sum of all angles =1080° ]

● 9 SIDED- Nonagon [ Sum of all angles =1260° ]

2

● 10 SIDED - Decagon [ Sum of all angles =1440° ]

Types of Polygons
● CONVEX & CONCAVE
○ CONVEX
➢ all diagonals inside the polygon
➢ all interior angles less than 180°
○ CONCAVE
➢ at least 1 diagonal outside the polygon
➢ 1 or more interior angle(s) should be greater than 180°

● REGULAR & IRREGULAR

○ REGULAR
➢ Polygon which has equal sides and angles. ( Is equilateral and equiangular)
○ IRREGULAR
➢ Polygon which does not have equal sides and angles. ( Is not equilateral and
equiangular)

Angle Sum Property

● Number of triangles in a shape is two less than the number of its sides, using this concept
we have a formula through which we can find out the angle sum property of a polygon.

● FORMULA - ( n -2 ) x 180 ° [ n being the number of sides ]

Exterior Angle of a Polygon

● Interior angle + Exterior angle = 180 °

● Sum of exterior angles of a polygon = 360 °
