BACKGROUND LESSON
LESSON 1: POLYGON INTERIOR ANGLES THEOREM
According to Polygon Interior Angles Theorem, the sum of the measures of the interior angles of a convex
polygon with n sides is (n−2)180 ° .
Symbols: m∠ 1+ m∠ 2+…+m ∠ n=(n−2) 180 °
Example 1:
Find the sum of the measures of the interior angles of the figure.

Solution:
The figure is a convex polygon. It has 9 sides. Use the Polygon Interior Angles Theorem.
( n−2 ) 180 °= ( 9−2 ) 180 ° Substitute 8 for n
¿ ( 7 ) 180 ° Simplify
¿ 1,260 ° Multiply
Answer:
The sum of the measures of the interior angles of the figure is 1,260º.

Example 2:
Find the measure of ∠ A in the diagram.

Solution:
The polygon has 6 sides, so the sum of the measures of the interiors angles is:
( n−2 ) 180 °= (6−2 ) 180 °=( 4 ) 180° =720° .

Add the measures of the interior angles and set the sum equal to 720 ° .
136 ° +136 °+ 88 °+142 ° +105 °+ m∠ A=720° The sum is 720 °
607 ° +m∠ A=720 ° Simplify
m∠ A=113 ° Subtract 607 °
Answer:
The measure of ∠ A in the diagram is 113º

Example 3:
The sum of the measures of the interior angles of a convex polygon is 900 ° . Classify the polygon by the
number of sides.

Solution:
Use the Polygon Interior Angles Theorem to write an equation involving the number of sides n. Then
solve the equation to find the number of sides.

( n−2 ) 180 °=900° Polygon Interior Angles Theorem

( n−2 )=5 Divide each side by 180 °
n=7 Add 2 to both side.
Answer:
The polygon has 7 sides. It is a heptagon.

Example 4:
Find the measure of an interior angle of a regular octagon.
Interior Angles Formula for a Regular Polygon

i = measure of each interior angle of a regular convex polygon
n = number of sides
Solution:

180(8−2)
i= Substitute

180(6)
i= Subtract

i=135 ° Simplify

Answer:
The measure of an interior angle of a regular octagon is 135 ° .

Example 5:
How many sides does a regular polygon have if each interior angle measures 160 ° ?
Solution:
Given: i=160 ° , n = ?
Use the Interior Angles Formula for a Regular Polygon
180(n−2)
i=

180(n−2)
160 °= Substitute

160 n=180n−360 Multiply both side n.
−20 n=−360 Collect like terms.
n=18 Divide both side −20 .
Answer:
The number of sides does a regular polygon have if each interior angle measures 160º is 18.

LESSON 2: POLYGON EXTERIOR ANGLES THEOREM

An Exterior Angle is the angle formed by one side of a polygon and the extension of the adjacent side. In all
polygons, there are two sets of exterior angles, one that goes around clockwise and the other goes around counter
clockwise.

According to Polygon Exterior Angles Theorem, the sum of the measures of the exterior angles of a convex
polygon, one angle at each vertex, is 360º.

Symbols: m∠1+ m∠2+…+m ∠n=360 °

Example 1:
Find the value of x.

Solution:
Using the Polygon Exterior Angles Theorem, set the sum of the measures of the exterior angles equal to
36 0 ° .
95 ° +85 ° +2 x ° + x °=36 0° Polygon Exterior Angles Theorem
180 °+ 3 x =36 0 ° Combine like terms.
3 x °=180 Subtract 180 from each side.
x=6 0 ° Divide each side by 3.
Answer:
The value of x is 60º.

Example 2:

Two interior angles of a triangle are 40∘ and 73∘. What are the measures of the three exterior angles of
the triangle?

Remember that every interior angle forms a linear pair (adds up to 180∘) with an exterior angle. So, since one of
the interior angles is 40∘ that means that one of the exterior angles is 1400 (because 40+140=180). Similarly, since
another one of the interior angles is 730, one of the exterior angles must be 1070. The third interior angle is not given to us,
but we could figure it out using the Triangle Sum Theorem. We can also use the Exterior Angle Sum Theorem.
If two of the exterior angles are 1400 and 1070, then the third Exterior Angle must
0
be 113  since 140+107+113=360.
So, the measures of the three exterior angles are 140, 107 and 113.

Example 3:

Find the value of x and the measure of each angle.

Set up an equation using the Exterior Angle Theorem.

(4x+2)0 + (2x−9)0 = (5x+13)0

remote interior angles exterior angle

(6x−7)0 = (5x+13)0

x=20

Substitute in 20 for x to find each angle.

[4(20) +2]0=820[2(20) −9]0=310 Exterior angle: [5(20) +13]0=1130

Activity 2: Fill Me
Directions: Refer to figure 1.1, find the sum of the interior angle/s of a convex polygon by drawing all possible diagonals
from one vertex of the polygon. This creates a set of triangles. The sum of the angle measures of all triangles equals the
sum of the angle measures of the polygon.
