What is Persuasive Speech?


● Attempting someone to change beliefs, attitude, behavior or to convince someone to
give you something or making the person perceive things in your way.

Purpose of the Persuasive Speech


● To change the attitude, belief, and values of the audience
● To convince or to actuate response for specific problem
● There are three types of persuasive speech:
- Proposition of fact (which the speaker tells about some certain facts that cannot
be changed either true or false)
- Proposition of value (which the speaker tells about more on the moral values
whether the situation is right or wrong)
- Proposition of policy (Which speaker is advocate a specific change in behavior or
actions towards on some policies or actions)

● Lastly, in choosing persuasive speech topic you need to consider:


- Can I speak enthusiastically?
- Can I support my arguments?
- Can I relate to the audience?

● Began on giving something statistical or anything informative.
● Giving hint on explaining the central ideas on the next paragraphs
● The central ideas should have (problems, solution, and visualization)

avoid focussing too much on the need. Instead, we need to explain the

★ Note: The youtuber reminds us to describe it in a positive way instead of
instilling fear on the audience. Eg: If my proposal is adopted, the citizens
can enjoy a prosperous country.
Technique
● During high school, we are told to persuade others with facts and figures. The more
statistics or facts we present, the more persuasive our speech will be. Nevertheless, that
is a problem with this technique. The audience will want to play devil’s advocate when
we try to persuade them by using statistics. They will try to think of some exceptional
circumstances that the statistics will not be valid even when they actually agree with the
concept.
● Therefore, one of the examples to tackle human nature is by presenting a real-life story.
The technique of using stories to tell people about the moral of the story has been
implemented long before, e.g. there are many parables in the Bible.
● A professional speaker is most likely to succeed when they incorporate a real-life story
about themselves in their presentation. The speaker of the video also gave an example
of the experience of the consequence of not wearing a seatbelt.
● In brief, it can be said that it is a great way to start the persuasive speech with a 2 to 3
minutes story so that the audience can be persuaded.
