MIDTERM PROJECT

“Just keep in mind that we are not mind readers, we study behavior” these are
the very words of advice coming from Ms. April Jane P. Baring, 27 years old, a
guidance counselor and a life coach. Ma’am April has choose this track since she’s
always passionate about helping people who are having rough times and help them set
goals. Most of her routines as a guidance counselor includes conducting group
guidance and evaluation, parents and teachers conference, conducting academic follow
up, maintaining student records and organizing files.
The same as every individual on this planet Ma’am April also experienced the
hard times, for her it was a great challenge when she handled a student who’s been
abused. She then take action responsibly, counseled and do follow-up check the
student from time to time, talk and call the attention of parents and teachers. She also
suggest that for special cases beyond her expertise students should be referred to a
specialist or other relevant parties to ensure that the special needs of the student are
met.
Even with a lot of achievements, Ma’am April shared that she can’t tell whether
she made a good decision in her job but she added in order for her to have better
decisions she always provide plans, evaluate and consider other relevant factors. That
is why she always surround herself with positive people, she always set goals, she
knows her worth, embrace changes, seeks feedback, and be flexible for her to always
stay motivated and ready for action. Being a counselor is not an easy job but for Ma’am
April it makes her happy whenever she help a student in need and be able to guide and
assist them with their academic and career. It is hard but a fulfilling job in the end.
It was really wonderful to hear all of these words from a person who’s already
doing her work, as a student it lights me up because I somehow also wanted to be a
guidance counselor. The pressure will always be there but Ma’am April’s advices
cheered me up more. We are not mind readers but in everything we do, we should
always put our heart in it, stay focused and responsible. The conversation filled me with
knowledge and for a short amount of time it has taken me to Ma’am April’s world as a
counselor. Aside from knowing what she does in her job, I also realized that before we
help others it is important that we take care of ourselves first. We are vaccinated with a
positive, progressive and understanding mind before we can inspire others or help
others to do so. It’s a win-win situation. Studying psychology can help us understand
human behavior therefore also allowing us to also understand our self, how we think
and how we act (Baring, 2021).
With this fast changing world, it needs people like Ma’am April, like us. To bring
light in the darkest times.
