Get one-third of the papers from the highest scores and one-third from the lowest scores.
Count the number of pupils in the upper and lower groups and record these in a frequency
table like the one shown below.

Options A B *C D E

Upper Group (1/3) 1 2 9 1 1

Lower Group (1/3) 3 2 3 4 2

* Correct answer

1. Difficulty Index

n = 9+3 = 12
N=28
DF= n/N
DF = 12/28 = 0.43 or 43%

Only 43% of the examinees got the answer correctly; hence the level of difficulty for
this item is moderately difficult.

2. Discrimination Index

CUG = 9 CLG = 3 D = 14

CUG - CLG 6-4 2

DI= ------------ = ---------- = ------ = 0.14 or 14%
D 14 14

More students from the upper group get the correct answer than the lower
group; hence, it has positive discrimination.

3. Determine the effectiveness of each option.

All options are effective. Options A, D, and E attract the lower group equally;
thus, they should be retained. Option B needs modification since the upper group
and lower group have equal results; hence, we can say that students are guessing
and that it needs to be modified.
