Instruc onal So ware Lesson Idea

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the ac vi es. Students are guided by the teacher's
direc on and expecta ons. Learning ac vi es are assigned to the student and mostly prac ce based.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the ac vi es. They may select the topic of learning and/
or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates the learning as the
students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and comple ng projects to
demonstrate their learning. Addi onally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. (Note: This
objec ve could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, pos ng the project
to the classroom blog, presen ng it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.)
How will you connect this topic to students’ prior knowledge as you teach?
A er reading the book Just Like Me with students, we will talk about ways that the important
historical gures we learn about in school aren’t much di erent than we are. We will talk about how
making connec ons to historical gures can help us be er understand who they are as people.

This technology will help students express themselves in a crea ve way that best makes sense for
them. When students are able to see themselves re ected in learning ac vi es, they will be er have
success in mastery of the content.
Lesson idea implementa on:
First, we will read the book Just Like Me. We will have a brief discussion about how making personal
connec ons to historical gures can help us be er understand who they are as people. Students will
then break up into pairs. Each pair will be assigned an important historical gure. The pair will work
together to create their short story using Powerpoint. Groups will be assigned a short rubric to guide
them as they are working. Groups will have full crea vity in crea ng their ebook- but they must use
the book Just Like Me as a resource for historical informa on. Students will have the choice to either
1) add pictures embedded in Microso Powerpoint or 2) draw their own pictures and upload them.
Each pair will then read their ebook aloud to their classmates.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Re ec on:
This lesson provides mul ple opportuni es for students to engage in the learning material. Students
will have the chance to choose if they would like to add images to their digital story from Powerpoint
itself, or if they would like to draw and upload their own images. Giving students choice helps to
empower them as crea ve thinkers. Students will also be able to collaborate with a peer when
crea ng their ebook. Doing this helps to establish a spirit of collabora on in the classroom se ng,
where students view one another as valuable assets for learning.

These ac vi es will posi vely impact student learning because the technology resource enables
students to be crea ve thinkers in the classroom. I look forward to seeing the di erent short stories
my students create, and to see how they would describe themselves if they took on the role of an
important historical gure.
