Content Standard Addressed: (List the number and the verbiage for the standard.)
SKL2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare the similarities and differences in
groups of organisms. A) Construct an argument supported by evidence for how animals can be
grouped according to
their features.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
Creative Communicator Standard 6a be able to do by the end of this lesson:
Students choose the appropriate platforms By the end of this lesson, the students should

features. They should also feel more
comfortable using the Sway tool for future
assignments or to read other storybooks.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? While reading this storybook, you will
be able to nd the similari es and di erences between animals in the jungle. A er reading

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply:

X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the ac vi es. Students are guided by
teacher direc on and expecta ons.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the ac vi es. They may select the topic for
presenta on and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are comple ng projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objec ve could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, pos ng the project to the classroom blog,
presen ng it to another class, or publishing via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementa on:

This storybook will be used to introduce our “animals in their environments” chapter where
we visit di erent environments and explore the di erent types of animals and plants there. To
ease the students into the ac vi es in this chapter, the students will be assigned this
storybook to introduce them to the style of the chapter. The storybook should excite the
students as it introduces a new topic and a new so ware (Sway) to learn the topics. A er
reading my storybook, they will create their own sway. They will choose one of the animals in
from my storybook and create a sway with a collec on of images, videos, sounds, etc. of their
chosen animal. They will present their sways during class me so that the students can learn
from each other’s sways.
Managing engagement:
This lesson includes an interac ve storybook to introduce the students to the science topic.
Instead of having to read a book for a certain amount of me, the students are able to move
through the storybook at their own pace and u lize features like audio and picture stacks.
These features allow for a more interac ve experience for the students, and it will increase
par cipa on. I will also allow me in class for the students to present their own personal
presenta ons which will count as their grade.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
This lesson addresses mul ple di erent learning types. If any of my students are not comfortable with
reading on their own, this assignment addresses more learning types than just visual. The storybook
includes audio for all wri ng in the book, and there are visual features that allow for a more
interac ve experience. Instead of just ipping or clicking to change the page the storybook has stacks
to click through pictures and audio clips to listen to the story while scrolling.

Re ec ng on enhanced learning:
This lesson allows more room for personal mo va ons. Instead of just assigning pages to read
in a book or textbook, and only giving the students informa on in one way, this storybook has
mul ple ways to give informa on to the student. The storybook has high quality pictures,
clear audio, interac ve features, colorful icons, and accessibility. This makes it easier for the
students to take in the new informa on that I am sharing with them, and makes it a li le bit
more fun and exci ng for them as well. They also get to use my storybook as an example for
their own.
