EXPERIMENT 3 Reaction of Aqueous Solution of Halogens

1.0 Objectives : (State the objectives of the experiment)

1) To study the solubility, acidity and reactivity of aqueous solution of halogens.

2.0 Introduction : (Write the background/theory of the experiment)

Before you start the experiment, there are a couple of terms you should understand.€

Halogen€– The elements in Group 17 (or VIIA or 7A) of the periodic table are called the halogens.
€These elements are naturally found as diatomic species.€In this experiment, they are (Cl2Cl2,€Br2Br2,
and€I2I2).€Cl2Cl2€is a gas,€Br2Br2€is a liquid and€I2I2€is a solid at room temperature.€ We have made
solutions of all of these in water.

In this experiment, we will mix each of the aqueous solution with the halide ion solutions which were
the Cl- (aq), Br- (aq) and Cl- (aq) in order to observe the reactions that take place. The potassium ion
only act as the spectator ion which do not involve in the halogen-halide reaction. Chlorine ions act as
the strongest oxidizing agent where it can oxidize the other halide ions such as bromide ion and iodide
ion. It tend to take the electron from bromide ion and iodide ion. This makes the oxidation state of
halogens group to change from 0 to -1 where reduction occurred. However, oxidation state of halide
ions also changed from -1 to 0 where oxidation occurred. After added all the reagent, hexane which act
as a non-polarsolvent was added in order to distinguish the halogens formed by separated the colour of
solution into two different layers. Halogens molecules which are non-polar molecules will tend to
dissolve in hexane instead of polar solvent.

3.0 Experimental Procedure : (Write the flowchart of the procedure)

PART A : REACTION OF HALOGEN AQUEOUS SOLUTION WITH HYDROCARBON

1. Pour about 5 mL of chlorine water, bromine water and iodine solution into a separate Wheaton bottle
and label accordingly.

Add 5ml chloroform to each of the bottle

CHLOROFORM

shake the mixture for few inverting the bottles for few time

Part B: Acidity and Bleaching Properties of Halogen Aqueous Solution

1. Place three pieces of universal indicator strip on a piece of white tiles. Transfer 1-2 drops
of chlorine water, bromine water and iodine solution onto each strip using a glass rod.

2. Observe the changes for a few minutes and then record the colour of the strips.
3. Use tissue to wipe the surface of the tile.
Part C: Displacement Reactions
1. On the surface of white tile, put 3 drops of chlorine water, bromine water and iodine
solution by using a dropper (refer diagram below).

2. Observe the changes for a few minutes and then record the colour of the strips.
3. Use tissue to wipe the surface of the tile.

6.0 Post-Lab Questions

a) If in the other experiment where the chloroform is replaced to water, what is expected to be observed
during the experiment?
Chlorine + water
CL+H2O=HCL=HOCL(HYPOCHLOROUS acid)
-The solution formed is acidic and contains bleaching agent.
-Hypochlorous(I) acid is a strong bleaching agent.

Bromine+ water
BRO+H2O=HBr +HoBr
-Bromine liquid dissolves slowly in water to form a
yellowish-brown solution

Iodine+ water
I2 + H2O= HI+HOI
-Only a little iodine dissolves in water
To form a yellowish solution

b)Chlorine solution is more suitable for preparing bleaching solution than bromine solution. Justify this
statement.

Chlorine water has both oxidising and bleaching chemical properties, because chlorine produces nascent
oxygen molecules while reacting with the normal water and this nascent oxygen is the main reason
behind the bleaching and oxdising properties of the chlorine water and Bromine, tend to be lower and
weaker than those to chlorine.
