Objectives:
The objectives of this experiment are to:
1. investigate the physical properties such as solubility and flammability;
2. compare the chemical reactivity of hydrocarbons.

Introduction:
Hydrocarbons are compounds containing carbon and hydrogen only. The carbon can be bonded into the hydrogen atom via a single, double
or triple bond. The structure of these compounds can be linear, branched and cyclic. The structure and nature of bonding makes the compounds
unique among each other. Nonetheless, since these contains both carbon and hydrogen, they showed the same general properties such as
insoluble in water but soluble in nonpolar solvents, less dense than water, combustible and many others. However, general property is not
enough to classify hydrocarbons.

Additional method to classify a hydrocarbon is to look into its chemical reactivity behavior. Alkanes, due to its stable nature, is unreactive
to most reagents under normal conditions. They react with halogens via substitution reaction, however, only with the aid of ultraviolet light. On
the other hand, unsaturated hydrocarbons react readily with reagents via an addition reaction. Aromatic compounds undergo substitution reaction
rather than an addition reaction in the presence of catalysts.

Another distinguishing characteristic of the different types of hydrocarbon is the way they burn. The difference is the degree of the
completeness of the combustion process. Saturated hydrocarbon tends to burn completely. On the contrary, unsaturated hydrocarbons tends to
burn with low degree of completeness. Evident to this is black smoke produced during the combustion process. Generally, as the degree of
unsaturation increases, the degree of completeness of the combustion process decreases.
