The Effects of Teenage Pregnancy in Academic Performances

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

This chapter contains the background of the study, the statement of the
problem, the scope and delimitation, significance of the study, and definition of terms.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Teen pregnancy is defined as a pregnancy in a woman who is 19 years of age or

younger. A woman could become pregnant if she has vaginal intercourse with a guy
at any age after she has started having recurring monthly periods. It is a serious
modern societal issue that affects almost every country on the planet. This study aims
to raise awareness about adolescent pregnancies. That is also the reason why we
choose this topic. This time of the pandemic, an increasing number of young women
are becoming moms. We also want teens like us and the readers to understand how
difficult it is to have a child that is unprepared physically, emotionally,
psychologically, and even financially. We also want them to realize that having a
child at a very young age is a tremendous responsibility for which we are not yet
really prepared. And most importantly, it will have a significant influence on their
academic performances and with their prospects. This study aimed to find out what
are the impacts of teenage pregnancy on the academic performances of the students.
Having the occurrence of teenage pregnancy means that teens are at a higher risk for
pregnancy-related high blood pressure (preeclampsia) and its complications than
average-age mothers. Risks for the baby include premature birth and low birth weight.
Preeclampsia can also harm the kidneys or even be fatal for the mother or baby. This
due to the girls' age and the lack of any regular means of assistance to care for the
children and themselves when they were supposed to be at school. Teenage
pregnancy and motherhood are said to be connected with shame, humiliation, school
dropout, and, in certain cases, the termination of a person's ambitions of reaching
higher goals. (Mayo Clinic, 2020). One of the biggest issues that adolescent moms
faced was a lack of employment to buy the basics required to care for their children.
Teen parents generally work limited hours because of school and/or the unfortunate

part is abandoning schooling to find a job and make some money. During their
pregnancy, adolescent moms frequently cannot afford medical visits, vitamins,
ultrasounds, and other aspects of prenatal care. They had no choice but to seek
public/government/NGO aid or, in many cases, be covered by their parents.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to know the effect of Teenage Pregnancy in Academic

Performance in ACLC NORTHBAY school year 2020-2021, specifically, it sought
answers to the following:

1. What are the effects of teenage pregnancy on the economy?

2. What is the impact of teenage pregnancy on the population?
3. How can we prevent unwanted teenage pregnancy?

What are the effects of teenage pregnancy on the economy?

Teenage pregnancy carries a social stigma that leads to a high risk of poverty,
illiteracy, or lower education levels and “once it happens, such a girl will forever have a
mark that hinders her progress in future" Although in traditional societies the majority of
these pregnancies are socially desired, several studies have pointed out the enormous
risks which are associated with teenage pregnancies.

In the Economic Consequences when teens fall pregnant they are forced to
drop out of school which lowers their chances of finding employment. Early childbearing
may result in poor health outcomes and may be a threat to the country's economic
growth. Pregnant adolescents are less likely to complete higher education and have lesser
ability to earn more income over the course of a lifetime, causing economic losses to the
country.

What is the impact of teenage pregnancy on the population?

In a statement on ( PopCom, 2020) cited the latest data from the Philippine
Statistics Authority which revealed that Filipino minors who gave birth in 2019 increased
to 62,510 from 62,341 in 2018. This is the ninth consecutive year that the country has
reported a rise in teenage pregnancies, PopCom warned.

Teenage pregnancies are associated with social issues, including lower

educational levels and poverty.Teenage pregnancy in developed countries is usually
outside of marriage and is often associated with a social stigma. However, in these
societies, early pregnancy may combine with malnutrition and poor health care to cause
medical problems. When used in combination, educational interventions and access to
birth control can reduce unintended teenage pregnancies.

According to (WHO, 2020)), Approximately 12 million girls aged 15–19

years and at least 777,000 girls under 15 years old give birth each year in developing
regions. In the developing world At least 10 million unintended pregnancies occur each
year among adolescent girls aged 15–19 years old . Of the estimated another 5.6 million
abortions that occur each year among adolescent girls aged 15–19 years, 3.9 million are
unsafe, contributing to maternal mortality, morbidity and lasting health problems.

How can we prevent unwanted teenage pregnancy?

In order to prevent teenage pregnancy, teenagers need to have a

comprehensive understanding of abstinence, contraceptive techniques, and consequences.
Although there are many different ways to prevent a teenage girl from becoming
pregnant, the only one that is absolutely effective is sexual abstinence.

However there are many methods available to help prevent pregnancy,

including IUDs, birth control pills, and condoms. Additionally, many groups, such as
SHIFT NC in North Carolina and Planned Parenthood, offer support or counseling
programs for teens. You should also be sure to look for regional groups in your state or
city

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study is delimited to students who have been pregnant at their teens (12-
19) years old and living in, Philippines. The subjects were drawn to the students who
have been pregnant and or have been a student in their teenage days and living in the
Philippines. The study focused on the extent of major causes of teenage pregnancy
which are family, peers, community, and church involvement, with the educational
development of students and out-of-school youth in the Philippines.

The perception of the teenager to the effects of major causes of teenage

pregnancy were limited to educational development only. These were the dependent
variables of the study. The dependent variables of the respondents indicate the effects

of educational development among students in school and out-of-school youth. These

are teenagers who got pregnant and pursued their studies in spite of the hassle of
being in the school and having a child to rear. There are also teenagers who got
pregnant, tried to go to school and earned a vocation plus degree. While others did
not. There are also teenagers, especially out-of-school youth who never have the
chance to go to school after pregnancy.

The goal of the research is to examine the effects of a teenage pregnancy.

Since there are limitations on this research, the investigation is limited to the
following group of girls within the adolescent age of 12-19 years old in ACLC
NORTHBAY students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is being conducted to learn about the consequences of adolescent

pregnancy, especially because we are now living a next normal lifestyle, and to
comprehend the benefits and drawbacks of having a kid at such a young age. This
study's contribution to our present learning process is the realization that we must
focus on our studies to be prepared for the future. Because adolescent pregnancy
continues to be a major cause of mother and child death. Pregnancy and delivery
complications are the biggest cause of mortality for girls aged 12 to 19. Because of
their young bodies, pregnant girls and adolescents face additional health risks and
difficulties.

The result of this study will be benefited the following:

The Teenage. This study will help to assess the awareness of teenagers about the
prevention of teenage pregnancy.

The Parents or Guardians. Parents and guardians should be more aware of the risks
of having a child at a young age, including not just financial stability or educational
success, but also the mental, emotional, and physical health of teens.

The Community. To assist individuals in avoiding making rash judgments on

adolescent pregnancy due to a lack of understanding. People tend to provide views
that are not even beneficial for adolescent pregnancy, which leads to a loss of trust
and faith in one's ability to continue living. It is never a sin to have a kid at a young
age.

The Future Researchers. The findings will assist future researchers in expanding
their studies on adolescent pregnancy. This might be a useful source of information
on early pregnancy.

In addition, sex education and the provision of school-based daycare and

parenting centers for those teens who are currently (or soon will be) parents should be
part of the solution to teen parenthood. These solutions would give practical and
successful ways to help students complete their education while simultaneously
providing instruction in responsible parenting.

Furthermore, pregnant teenagers who drop out of school have fewer

opportunities for themselves, and their children have a lower chance of succeeding in
school or their jobs. As a result, it's critical to assist and encourage pregnant teenagers
to continue their studies. Aside from the official educational system, there are several
choices for pregnant teenagers in some places: Special schools for pregnant or
parenting adolescent girls, initiatives to assist pregnant adolescent girls in completing
their schooling, and non-formal education are all available.

They also need someone to assist them through the tough periods and assist
them in accomplishing their goals. Parents, instructors, school counselors, social
workers, and peer support groups should give them the necessary assistance to finish
their education and skill development programs.

Teenagers must have a thorough awareness of abstinence, contraceptive

methods, and penalties to avoid adolescent pregnancy. It is proposed that dropping
out of school is a "uniquely predictive factor" of adolescent pregnancy and that it is a
prelude to, rather than a result of, becoming pregnant. (Bonillo et al, 2004).
Immaturity, unpreparedness for parenthood, and reliance were among the difficult
challenges encountered by single–supporting moms throughout their adolescent years.

Furthermore, be intelligent and accountable in all of our judgments and

activities. We must think things through several times before making judgments to
avoid making mistakes that will make our life more difficult. We must be strong and
bold enough to be responsible and accountable in our decisions after setting
resolutions. More significantly, we must focus on studying to complete our studies on
time, get a steady job or maybe start a business, and look forward to a brighter future.

From our point of view, our topic is excellent because studying

adolescent pregnancy is very vital to us, especially now, because this awareness has a
huge effect on us young women to take care of ourselves and make rational decisions
before doing something we shouldn't be doing. Because, in the end, we are the only
ones who will have to repent and bear the burden of the consequences. According to
our interviews with those who have been teenage moms, their position was tough and
they were sorry for what they had done, but they had no choice but to accept and
nurture their kid at such an early age. Regardless of what happened to them, we were
inspired by their ability to face their difficulties and perseverance in the face of
hardship.
