CONCEPT 1: Percent
Percentage: Representing Parts
Percentage: "Percent" comes from the latin Per Centum. The latin word Centum means 100, hence, ‘Per 100’.
● represent the parts out of 100
● often denoted by the symbol ‘%’
● can be a number followed by the symbol or a fraction of 100

For example: 45% --- 45 out of 100, that can be represented as decimal as well.
Hence, 45% = 45/100 = 0.45

Mean,median,mode,range
Data Handling: Mean, Median, Mode, Range
Range: the difference between the highest and lowest value in a given data set.
For example, let us consider the data set - 6, 8, 4, 9, 7, 3, 5
● Arrange the numbers in ascending or descending order - 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
● Find: Highest value = 9, Lowest value = 3
● Subtract the lowest from highest value. Therefore, Range = 9-3 = 6

Mean Median Mode

*Average of all the values in *Middle value in a set of data, arranged lowest to highest *The most frequent value in a data
a data set or vice versa set
● Add up all the values ● Arrange the values in ascending or descending ● No mode - if all the values
to find the sum order occur for the same number of
● Divide the sum by ● Identify the middle number as the median (in case times.
the total number of of odd number of data) ● More than 1 mode - if more
values ● If there are 2 middle numbers, find the average of than 1 number is the most
the 2 numbers (in case of even number of data) frequent
Sum = 6+8+4+9+7+3+5 = Order - 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
42 Median = 6
Mean = 42 7=6

Slide 20: Real life problems

1) There were 42 mangoes in each crate. 12 such crates of mangoes were delivered to a factory. 4
mangoes were rotten and had to be thrown away. The remaining mangoes were packed into boxes
of 10 mangoes each. How many boxes of mangoes were there?
2) Kyle is making 9 birdhouses. He uses 8 nails for each birdhouse. If Kyle has a box of 100 nails,
how many nails will he have left after making the birdhouses?
3) Cody has 6 pencils on his desk, Jonah has 4 more than Cody and Vinny has three less pencils than
Jonah. How many pencils are there in all?
4) Rosalind made 364 donuts. She put 8 donuts into each box.
a) How many boxes of donuts were there? How many donuts were left over?
b) If she sold each box for Rs.40, how much money would she receive?
