A CONCEPT PAPER ON DRUG

ADDICTION

Drug addiction is a chronic disease and it affects different people in different ways especially the brain
and changes the structure and its function. Drugs can also make the person addicted in a short period of
time due to some personal reasons. It can be hard for the user to stop the addiction but it also has some
steps to help the individual.

Taking of drugs is chronic because no matter how often a person is consuming the drug, it will always
cause problems to its personal life. When this happens, the person is likely to have a drug abuse. It is
chronic because it needs more willpower for the taker to stop the abuse and drugs relapses the brain
and changes the structure and function. Drugs also disrupt the way nerve cells send, receives, and
process information due to the chemicals present in the drug. Drugs target the brain’s reward system by
flooding dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter present in regions of brain that regulates
movement, emotion, and feelings of pleasure.

Stress, anxiety, and depression encourages some people to take drugs in order to lose them. Stress is
simply a reaction to a stimulus that disturbs our physical or mental equilibrium, anxiety is a feeling of
worry, nervousness, or unease, while depression is a serious medical condition in which a person feels
very sad, hopeless, and unimportant and often is unable to live in a normal way. Drug abuse can make
the person lose its self-control. Self-control is the person’s control over its own self. With self-control, it
helps the person to plan appropriately, knows what is wrong from what is right and avoid things that will
be regretted later. When self-control is lose, the person can kill or do bad things towards the innocents
surrounding him or present in the community.

Getting rid of this kind of lifestyle may be hard to an individual who abuses drugs because that person is
already used to live without worrying about the problems he or she is facing and does not want to feel
normal again. For those abusers, drugs for them is their escape to reality. Reality is the totality of all
things possessing actuality, existence, or essence. It is hard for those person to accept the happenings in
the world that is why they make their own medicine from reality which is drugs. It is better to stop drug
abuse earlier than to have too many deadly diseases. The first step to stop drug abuse is to go through a
supervised medical detox program. Medical Detoxification is a process that systematically and safely
withdraws people from addicting drugs, usually under the care of a physician. Secondly, the taker should
keep track of his drug use including when and how much he used. This will give the person a better
sense of the role the addiction is playing in his life. Lastly, the individual should consider that are more
important than using drugs such as that person’s loved ones, health, partner, and career.

Think wisely before getting your own self to trouble. Drugs may help the person relax but is deadly when
took seriously that leads to addiction.
