I. Answer the following questions : ( 10 x 4 = 40 )

1. Solve the following pair of linear equations by the substitution method :

x 2y y
+ = −1 ; x − = 3
2 3 3

2. Form the pair of linear equations for the following details and find their solution by
elimination method :

A lending library has a fixed charge for the first three days and an addition charge for
each day thereafter. Saritha paid ₹27 for a book kept for seven days , while Susy paid
₹21 for the book she kept for five days. Find the fixed charge and the charge for each
extra day.

3. Solve the following pair of linear equations by the cross - multiplication and the
substitution methods :

8x + 5y = 9 ; 3x + 2y = 4

4. Form the pair of linear equations for the following details and find their solution by
the elimination method :

y 5x 1 2x 5
The length of the sides of a triangle are 2x + , + y + and + 2y + . If the

triangle is equilateral , then find its perimeter.

5. Form the pair of linear equations for the following details and find their solution by
cross - multiplication method :

Places A and B are 100 km apart on a highway. One car starts from A and another
from B at the same time. If the cars travel in the same direction at different speeds ,
they meet in 5 hours. If they travel towards each other , they meet in 1 hour. What are
the speeds of the two cars?

6. Solve the following pair of equations by reducing them to a pair of linear equations :

6x + 3y = 6xy ; 2x + 4y = 5xy
7. Solve the following pair of linear equations by the cross - multiplication method :

ax by
− = a + b ; ax − by = 2ab
b a

8. Solve the following pair of linear equations by reducing them to a pair of linear
equations :

5 1 6 3
+ =2 ; − = 1 where x  1 and y  2
x −1 y − 2 x −1 y − 2

9. For which value of k will the following pair of linear equations have no solution ?

3x + y = 1 ; ( 2k – 1 ) x + ( k – 1 ) y = 2k + 1

10. Form the pair of linear equations for the following details and find their solution by
elimination method :

Susan invested certain amount of money in two schemes A and B , which offer interest
at the rate of 8% per annum and 9% per annum respectively. She received ₹1860 as
annual interest. However , had she interchanged the amount of investment in the two
schemes , she would have received ₹20 more as annual interest. How much money did
she invest in each scheme?
