WHAT ON EARTH ARE CARBON NANOTUBES..

• Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are carbon

structures with special properties that
make them useful in a wide range of
scientific and everyday applications.
DIFFERENT FORMS OF CARBON...
• There are 4 distinct forms of carbon

Fullerene Nanotube

Diamond Graphite
• Each form of carbon has its own unique
properties determined by the arrangement Zig-Zag
of atoms within it. CNTs exist in three
different forms. Even though the differences
are very small, they cause each one to have
its own unique properties.

• CNTs are extremely strong. A one
inch thick rope made up of CNTs is
100 times stronger than steel and is
1/6 times the weight of steel. Can
you imagine a building built with
ropes instead to steel or an
elephant on a platform supported
by CNT ropes.
• The strength and lightness of
carbon nanotubes make them
great materials for aerospace
industry

• The new BOEING 787 is the most
advanced passenger aircraft in
use today. Its body is made up of
carbon composites instead of
aluminium. Nanotubes are
stronger and lighter in weight.
• The aerospace industry is one of the most important heavy industries in the
world. Many companies rely on their ability to transport both products and
people around the world at speed. Therefore, it is unsurprising that the global
aircraft manufacturing market was valued at approximately 400 billion USD in
2017, with a predominant portion of this accounted for by military
spending. However, along with substantial economic value comes huge
resource consumption, and one of the largest carbon footprints on the planet
relative to the size of the market. For this reason, the primary drivers in
current aerospace R&D are towards lighter structural materials and more
efficient engines - the uniting goal being to curb fuel consumption and carbon
emissions associated with air travel and freight. The potential nanomaterials
and nanoengineering have in helping to achieve these goals, justifies the
significant interest in nanotechnology expressed by the aerospace industry.
