Background
Every chemical reaction involves energy changes. It is possible that in some reactions the increase
or decrease of temperature in the system is imperceptible, but in others it is clear. Magnesium
(Mg) is an element belonging to group 2 of the periodic table (Z = 12). It has the property of
burning in air, leaving a white ash that corresponds to a binary compound.

Magnesium in contact with an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid produces a binary salt and a
flammable gas.

We will do this reaction, looking for the way it exchanges energy with the environment. Because of
this, experimentation should be carried out with the utmost caution.

Materials
- test tube.

- thermometer.

- universal stand.

- tube and thermometer clamps.

- pipette.

- protective glasses.

Reagents
- 2 cm piece of magnesium tape.

- 6 M HCl solution (to be provided by your teacher).

Procedure:
1. You will have a system installed in the lab, where you will carry your experiment. All the clamps
and the universal stand will be handled by the teacher.

1. Using the pipette, the teacher will pour 10 mL of the HCl solution into the test tube.

2. Measure the initial temperature of the HCl solution and record the data.

3. Carefully introduce the small piece of Mg into the test tube using tweezers.

4. Every 20 seconds, measure the temperature of the system until the Mg is completely
consumed. Record your measurements.
