Given below, detail lists of thumb rules which are mostly used in construction

industry:-

Concrete: 0.038 cum per sq. ft. of plan area. (+/- 5%)

Steel: 4.50 to 5.00 Kg per sq. ft.

Shuttering: 2.40 to 2.50 times the plan area of slab (it contains col./beams/sides etc)

Brick Work: 0.015 cum per sq. ft. of plan area.

Roughly 0.25 cubic metres of mortar and 500 bricks are needed for 1 cubic metre of
brickwork

Concrete: 0.5A Cum for Commercial Bldg.

0.2A Cum for Residential Bldg.

Where, A denotes Total Built Up Area.(i.e. Plinth Area x No. of Floor)

Steel: 4.5-4.75 kg per Sqft of Built up Area for Residential Building

5.0-5.5 kg per Sqft of Built up area for Commercial Building.

Formwork: (1). Shuttering = 6 times the quantity of concreting.(or2.4 times the plinth area)

(a) No. of 12 mm Ply (2.44mx1.22m)=0.22 times of shuttering ( or, 0.4A)

(b) Batten (75mmx40mm)=19.82 X No. of Ply Sheets(it presents batten in RM)

(c) Nails=0.22x total area of shuttering.(unit-kg) Practically, 75 gm nails and 75 gm binding

wire + nut-bolts are used upper sqm of shuttering

(d) Shuttering Oil=0.065x total area of shuttering (unit-Lt)

QUANTITY OF SHUTTERING WITH EXAMPLE

EXAMPLE:

Suppose we have a covered area is 200o square feet and over there we need to construct the
R.C.C slab. So we need to calculate the quantity to tell the contractor.

1. To calculate the quantity of Shuttering Plywood, Nails, Shuttering oil, clamps etc.?

Given Data:

Covered shuttering Area = 2,000 square foot.

Shuttering type = Wooden

Solution:

The quantity of the shuttering is to be done in numbers or in running foots.

 Plywood: 12 mm thick (8′ x 4′)

= Covered area x Thumb rule

= 2000 sft x 0.02

= 40 No’s Ans…

 Wooden Battens : (3” x 3”)

= Covered area x Thumb rule

=2000 sft x 0.4

= 800 rft (running feet) Ans…

 Beam Bottom Plates: (1.5” thick)

= Covered area x Thumb rule

= 2000 x 0.24

= 480 rft (running feet) Ans…

 Wooden Ballies:

For Slab = Covered area x thumb rule

= 2000 x 0.16

= 320 No’s Ans..

For Beam = Beam bottom plate running feet x thumb rule

= 480 x 0.5

= 240 No’s Ans…

 Ms Clamps:

= Covered area x thumb rule

= 2000 x 0.08

= 160 No’s An..

 Shuttering Oil:

= Covered Area x thumb rule

= 2000 x 0.006

= 12 litters Ans..
