• † on Question indicates that the question is a bit different than the usual.

• You may use standard results derived in class/discussed in tutorial.

1. Find a particular solution for given non-homogeneous DE (3+2 = 5 Marks)

y 000 − 4y 0 = 4(cosh x)2

2. Find the general solution for given DE. (2+2+2 = 6 Marks)

(D − g(x))2 y = 0

where Dy = y 0 and g(x) is a continuous function.

Then/otherwise solve for g(x) = sin x and initial conditions y(0) = −1, y 0 (0) = 2.

3. Find the general solution of the non-homogenous Cauchy-Euler equation- (2+3 = 5 Marks)
1 1
x2 y 00 + 2xy 0 + y = √ + 2x2
4 x

4. Find the Wronskian of x2 , x2 ln x and x2 ln2 x for x > 0. (2+3 = 5 Marks)

5. Find the general solution of the given non-homgeneous DE using variation of parameters. (2+2+2 = 6 Marks)

ex
y 00 − 2y 0 + y =
1 + x2

6. † Let y1 and y2 be solutions of the DE in an open interval I and let p and q be continuous. (2+3 = 5 Marks)

y 00 + p(x)y 0 + q(x)y = 0

Prove that if y1 and y2 have a common point of inflection to ∈ I then they cannot be linearly
independent on I unless both p and q are zero at to .

7. † Find two linearly independent solutions of the given DE. (3+3 = 6 Marks)

(D − 2x)3 y = 0.

And write the steps as to how will you find the third solution of the given DE(no need of any solving,
express only in words). Full Marks for this part will be awarded only if all the steps are correct and sufficient!
