Q Explain and elaborate different reasons for people joining a group with relevant
examples from your social and personal life.
A A group is the collection of people gathered together to interact, and fulfill their
common objective. People get together, share ideas, teach each-other and learn from
each-other in a group. The reasons for people joining a group are:
Þ Working together for a common objective
• “We learn from each other”. So, people get proper experience and insights
from other members of the group. The outcome can be resulted faster when
there are multi-disciplinary people sharing insight about the objective.
Þ Learning more about self
• We can learn by seeing how other works in a group and how they handle every
situation. By seeing others, we can know what we are good at and how we can
handle that situation in a different way.
Þ Networking
• One of the main reasons someone joins a group is networking. Meeting new
person, making new connections, are how we grow our network. That network
we build in a group will help down the line in future.
Þ Communication
• People who are less comfortable relating to people outside their circle are
bound to communicate with others. This help to grow their communication
skills and ability to work with peoples.
Þ Have fun
• Working with group is always fun. People who share the task, teach each
other, learn from each other, have fun working together.

Joining a student organization is a good example of joining a group. I have been

active in a student union for more than 6 years. The reason to join this group were
solving common problems, personality development, self-learning, networking,
helping each other, and to have fun with multi-disciplinary peoples in the
organization.
Q Discuss (a) steps and (b) different strategies involved in problem solving through
small group communication with reference to Information and technology sector.
A Problem solving means handling the difficult situations that occurs during a task.
Peoples associated with the task are responsible in solving the problem. So, any
individual or the members of a group must have the problem-solving skill. These skills
can be developed in a small group through small group communication. Specially in
Information and technology sector, problems occur in a daily manner. Group should
communicate with each other to solve the problems together.

Þ The steps involved in problem solving are:

• Analyze the problem:
® To solve a problem, we should analyze it and find out what caused it.
• Understand the problem
® We can’t solve the problem without understanding the problem and
effectively developing solutions.
• Evaluate the solutions
® The group should evaluate the solution depending the nature of problem
and chain of command.
• Identify the root cause of problem
® The group should identify the root cause that was causing the problem and
try their best not to repeat that again.
• Develop a plan
® When the solution is evaluated, a plan should be developed in which the
actions are to be implemented.
• Implement the plan
® The plan developed should be implemented and all the actions should be
verified if completed or not.
• Conclusion of the plan
® After the plan is implemented, the result should be evaluated. The data
should be collected and the group should ensure that the problem doesn’t
arise again.

Þ The strategies involved in problem solving are:

• Past experiences
® Decisions should be made by analyzing according to past experiences.
• Collect and organize information
® Collecting the information and organizing it into chart, table, etc. can
make it easy to identify the problem and solution
• Work backwards
® Its efficient to work backward and recreate the event after which the
problem raised. This method may be easier to identify the root cause of the
problem.
• Trial-and-error approach
® This strategy is very fruitful if there are multiple solutions to the problem
and have to decide the best from all.
• Hold the problem
® If the problem doesn’t require immediate solution, it is better to hold the
problem and solve it after proper discussion and analysis.
