3.0 SYSTEM CHEMISTRY

System contaminants
The main contaminants can be found in chilled water system are as follows:
Debris
Water systems can pick up many extraneous materials which inadvertently find their way into
systems during manufacture, storage and installation of the components. These include
millscale, welding slag and metal swarf which can usually be removed by thorough clean water
flushing. Those which are not so easy to remove include cutting oil, soldering flux, jointing
compounds and grease.

Corrosion products
Corrosion products are typical contaminants of water systems. There are two main causes of
corrosion in steel pipework:
The electrolytic reaction between metal surfaces connected through the presence of an
electrolyte. In the case of a pipework system, the metal surfaces are connected by the
electrolyte, water. The reaction which takes place involves the iron in the pipework combining
with oxygen and hydrogen from the water, and then further reacting with dissolved oxygen to
form iron oxides.
The principal factors influencing the rate of corrosion are the types and concentrations of
impurities in the water, temperature, and the water flow rate. The chief chemical variables
controlling the corrosive characteristics of water are its dissolved oxygen concentration, carbon
dioxide content, pH and the amount of dissolved solids.

Biological fouling
The causes of biological fouling in water systems may be attributed to the source of the water, or
the introduction of impurities during installation. Bacterial problems are common and can be
difficult to predict.
Systems left filled but unused, or which are filled and subsequently drained, can quickly develop
a biofilm layer on pipe surfaces. In the right conditions, certain types of bacteria may multiply
and contribute to sludge formation and gassing.
The types of bacteria that cause problems are varied. Sulphate-reducing bacteria are the most
destructive groups of biological foulants because they can cause corrosion resulting in severe
localized pitting of pipework surfaces.

CLEANING PROCEDURES

After the completion of the steps mentioned in the site preparation on circuit and loop the
following will take place on each system as follows:

This specification details the steps required when carrying out the chemical cleaning of chilled
water system.

 STAGE I : Dynamic Flushing

 STAGE II : Chemical Cleaning
 STAGE III : Flushing
 STAGE IV : Passivation/ Flushing

STAGE I: DYNAMIC FLUSHING

FLUSHING OBJECTIVE:
 To remove as much as possible loose dirt and debris from the pipe work system.
 To reduce the likelihood of system blockage.
 To create the best possible circumstances for a successful treatment regime.
a. Gradually open drain points valves and adjust until rate balances the main flow rate in the
system. To remove loose light surface rust, mill scale and small debris. During dynamic flushing
and chemical cleaning.
b. Once flushing is complete, drain the water to the designated area.
Control parameters for Pre-Chemical Cleaning Stage (Plain Flushing Completion)
Please find below the water quality to be achieved before the addition of cleaning chemical
based on the indicated make up water quality.
Parameter Before addition of Cleaning Chemical
pH 7.5 to 8.5
TDS ppm < 100
Chlorides ppm as Cl < 300
Sulphate ppm as SO4 < 300
Total Hardness ppm as CaCO3 < 200
Total Alkalinity as CaCO3 < 80 ppm
Iron < 50 ppm
Suspended Solids < 200 ppm

Water should be calear almost as the makeup water clearity.

STAGE II: CHEMICAL CLEANING

a. Add the HYDREXTM 5208 cleaner at a level of 2.0 kg /M 3 of the system volume. Chemical cleaner
HYDREXTM 5208 will be introduced via an external dosing pot.

b. The water in the system should be recirculated for a period of 24 hours till the desired level of
cleaning is achieved and the circuit water parameters stabilize.

c. Recirculation continues for the next 24 hours before neutralization will be initiated.

STAGE III: FLUSHING

a. The water will be drained in several bleeding points, water will be drained from the network.
b. System will be refilled with fresh water and make balance flushing while part of the water pass
through the Side-Stream Filtration. Draining and balance flushing .
c. Balance flushing continues until the water runs clear and met the following water parameters:
Parameter Before addition of Cleaning Chemical
pH 7.5 to 8.5
TDS ppm < 1000
Chlorides ppm as Cl < 300
Sulphate ppm as SO4 < 300
Total Hardness ppm as CaCO3 < 200
Total Alkalinity as CaCO3 < 80 ppm
Iron < 5 ppm
Suspended Solids < 20 ppm

STAGE IV: PASSIVATION – METAL PREPARATION

a. Once the desired water quality is achieved at the end of stage III, all drain points will be shut and
passivation chemical will be dosed using chemical dosing pot.

All water quality parameters will be monitored to determine the progress of the passivation to
prevent flash rusting and prepare the metal surfaces for inhibition. It is advisable to passivate the
metal surface using HYDREXTM 2510 at the rate of 5 kgs/m3. This should be recirculated in 48
hours, then balance flushing will be conducted until the water becomes almost clear.

STAGE V: Enhancing

During the refilling / flushing with Hydrex-2924 (Enhancer) at dose rate of 2.0kg/m3 shall be
added to promote pre-filming and passivation. Delayed refilling allows ingress of atmospheric
oxygen which can result in to flush corrosion on pre-cleaned surfaces.

On immediate balance flushing, the system will be recirculated for 6 hours to react with the
metal surfaces to permit passivation. Thereafter the system will be flushed by balance drain and
refill. Draining the system should be avoided which can disturb the passivation process. This
balance drain and refill will be supported with Hydrex-2924 (Enhancer) at dosage rate of 2.0
kg/m3/hour to prevent flash corrosion. The above shall continue till clarity to the re-circulating
water is established.

At this stage of balance refill flushing, testing will conduct to make sure that the system are
ready and prepare for final fill of corrosion inhibitor. The Operating Parameters to be test are as
follows;

Total Dissolved Solids Equivalent to incoming water main.

pH Equivalent to incoming water main.
Iron in solution Less than 2 ppm
Visually clear and bright water, free from
Appearance
suspended solids.

STAGE VI: FINAL TREATMENT – CORROSION INHIBITOR/BIOCIDE DOSING

At this point the drain valve should be closed, system allowed to fill completely together with
corrosion inhibitor & biocide. The inhibitor concentration should be checked.
Total requirements of cleaner to be used in this stage:
Product Function Dosage Rate
HYDREXTM 2510S Corrosion Inhibitor 3.0 Kgs/m3
HYDREXTM 7910 Biocide 0.50 Kgs/m3
Note: After the addition of the final chemicals, which is the corrosion inhibitor and the biocide,
the chilled water in the system, should be under continuous circulation to avoid any corrosion
formation or bacterial growth. (i.e. the water should not be stagnant)
